Ive mocked up an Explorer and a V in photoshop. Ive got all the wood and parts accept for em accept the Spalted maple tops which im searching for at the minute.
Im gonna do a headstock along the lines of the Ken Lawrence one but maybe 4/2. Just in the stages of drawing something up for it.

Heres the spec-

Mahogany back,
Spalted maple top,
5A master grade flamed maple neck, (due to price probably just a little flame)
Ebony fingerboard,
Les paul custom block inlays,
White binding on neck,
Set Neck,
Locking Sperzels,
Emg 81 & 60,
Tunomatic and Stoptail or string through body.

Heres the mockups-

i must say that headstock makes the explorer looks terribly like mr. hetfields. Still pretty cool tho, i'm sure that spalted maple will be well worth the search!

Heres the V body. Managed to get it out a Normal size 1 piece body blank too by cutting it from corner to corner and joining the outside edges as the center joint.

Ive took little wedges out the sides where the clamps go otherwise when its clamped up the 2 halves slip away from one-another.

Yeah, I really like it but im gonna change it a bit so Its not just ripped off.

very nice. But id try to make the headstock more like a 6-in-line, but with the same top thing if u can. Honestly, i think Spalt Maple is a bit ugly, seeing as its a rot. But alot of ppl like it. Birdseye Maple fretboard + Zebrawood neck would look awesome. And the third Ebony fingerboard with the Maple neck would look great.

Good work, nice way of getting large guitars out of normal blanks

Gonna use the Zebrawood and maple f/board for a Wolfgang with a mahogany body with birdseye maple top.

Might do string through, not gonna decide until im ready fit hardwear. I think V's look good as string through but not too sure about explorers. They have such a large mass of wood behind the bridge that the stoptail helps balance it visualy.

Dont have any Explorer plans but I got a scale pic I can email you. Then all you gotta do is hit print and make a template from it. That any good? All im gonna do it follow my V plans coz the neck joint is at the same place and its the same angle.

that'd be great thanks.

Spalted maple=gorgeous!!! I dunno about the headstock, though, but it's your guitar, go with what you like. As far as tailpieces, I say go with the v-style string-thru body on the V. I always liked the look of an Explorer with a Floyd-Rose, but string-thru doesn't usually look so good. Explorer's just have so much square footage out back you have to break it up. Have you considered making an Explorer 90?

I personally don't like the combination of a very pointy headstock with a rounded body, but whatever. It's your project and that wood is very nice indeed

i think theyre awsome designs (Y)
and why arent you finishing the '10A flamed les paul' body your selling ?
if you carved it and did a finish im sure you could get a fair bit for it

To be honest, I cant be arsed to do it!
Its a really old bit of mahogany on the back too so it'll sound killer once its done. Might keep it and make a maple neck with silly flame to match the top. Thing is, its just sat there and I feel like I'll never get round to doing it coz I got so much on at the mo. I should keep it really because I've only done one Les Paul before.

Whats an Explorer 90 like?

It's an Explorer that's 90% the size of an Explorer. Smaller and lighter, without any real loss in sound.

The Gib explorer studio's and 05' discontinuted Pro's are what you're refering to. There's no way I could ever manage playing a full size explorer.

oh right. I dont really like em, think they look odd.

They only look odd if you're 6'0 or taller. Being 5'8, the regular explorers are pretty much the size of me.

No. the Explorer 90 is a guitar. It was made for Mathais Jabs, because he wanted an Explorer smaller than the state of Nevada. I'm pretty sure they were first made in the late 80's.
