I'm beginning to feel slightly limited sometimes with just 4 strings on my bass, so i

began thinking about getting one with more strings. Then i thought, why get 5 strings

when i could have 6?! So i just wanted some other bassists opinions on what the best 6

string basses are...

Yamaha makes nice 6 strings, and they are pretty durable.
But you better go and try one out before you decide to order/put your mind into one.
Since the neck is huge and the space between the strings are smaller so that means slapping and poping=harder to preform.

But it does give a wider range of tones and lets you re-position yourself on the neck.
I would also consider using an octaver pedal.

I've heard good things about the Peavey Grind 6 string, and I have to say they're mighty cheap.

for price range, i would go up to about £500, maybe a bit more if it was really good.

What about Ibanez 6-strings, what do you think of them?

btw, i've got an octaver, so i'll try it out on a 6-string.
#6
Keep in mind that string spacing will change a lot and you will probably be a little mixed up at first. I don't pay much attention to six strings, but I'm pretty sure there's a version of the Stiletto with six. They're known to be pretty good and not too expensive for what you get, so maybe check that out?

EDIT: I've played an Ibanez six, not too sure what model it was, but it felt pretty nice.

I'm with Forcemaster. I've also got an Ibanez SR506. Another one I'd recommend looking at is the Schecter Studio-6, but it's a bit more expensive.

Warwick have really nice six strings.

Not many good ones for £500 though.

EDIT:

Looking at my Warwick brochure, they only do 6 string Corvettes (standard Bubinga, ProLine), Streamer (LX, LX Broadneck, CT, Stage I Broadneck), Thumb (Bolt on, Bolt on Broadneck, NT).

As far as I'm aware, they aren't gonna fall under £500.

I'd say: save some more and buy a yamaha.

But I like those, if I buy a six-string it would be a yamaha I guess.

I like the neck, weight, string-spacing, looks and sound.

I really like the Yamaha 6ers as well. I don't own one but that is most likely what I get. They sound so friggin hot.

+1, first I need to get a decent amp.

Then a shiny Yamaha may come flying into my hands, and we will be bounded for eternity!!

This Stingray is quite good. I've played it once and I was impressed:

That's not a Stingray.

Wait, so Fragmented, the guy at the store told you that was a Stingray?

Well, don't go there again.

However, the fact that he told you it was a Stingray and that Google Images screwed up the fact that it's a Stingray makes me doubt you'd actually played it.

Accoring to Google images it is.

Did you search for John Myung sig or something? I think you meant the Bongo 6 string which is this:

That'll never be in the TS's price range.

6 string bongo huh? Hmm I didn't know about those. I love the sound of the bongos. If only they didn't look so whacky.

I was under the impression that they weren't gonna put the sixers on general sale till 2008. John Myung has 3.

that's true!

well they weren't on display at music live this year, which leads me to believe that the bongo 6er isn't yet a production model.

personally i can't wait till they are though. it'll be the only EBMM i ever buy

Screw 6 strings... when I get enough money, I'm getting an 8 string, as detailed in the last "your dream bass" thread

Anyone got a spare £5000?
