So when i improvise... i play the same thing in cleans as when i play in distortion, with scales and pentatonic and all... I think thats a bit weird? I how should i be playing differently when im in clean mode?

Also, when i try to figure out what key a song is in.... what is the easiest way to do that?

thanksss

The easiest way to figure out the key of a song is to follow the bass notes and then see what scales/chords work with those notes...sometimes you can listen to a track and just mess around on the guitar until you find a succession of notes that fit in to the song. Then just find the scale that contains those notes.

Okay, take your blues box:

0--3
0--3
0-2
0-2
0-2
0--3

(drumroll please...)

That's the key of....

----
----
----
----
----
---3

G!

Works the same in every key. The key is the second note of the standard blues box.

Blues box on 5 = key of C.

Box on 7 = D.

...etc.

You might look at learning more of a blues style for clean then when you hit distortion play more straight pentatonic pattern-based soloing, like repeated phrases played very quickly.

Clean = slow and with feeling
Distorted = fast, more mechanical

...that's the basic idea anyway. Good luck!
