Death, Necrophagist, Pantera, Children of Bodom, and I think some Dethklok is in Standard D, but I think most of their songs are in C.

I think Carcass is D on Necroticism and Heartwork

RoP and SoS are A maybe?

I thought Carcass was tuned to B or B flat on Heartwork? I could be wrong though.

wrong, most of Mötley Crüe is in D standard

even if it reads in the tabs:
"drop d tuning- DGCFAD"

that is actually D standard, D drop looks like this:
"DADGBE"

Metallica dont always play in E standard

Sad But True is D Standard. The Thing that Should Not Be is drop D, ST Anger is Drop C.

These are just some example.....so yes of course, you are correct, Metallica ALWAYS write in E Standard.....

You Fail son.

i thought all that remains is std D , anyway isn't important. thx for so much bands in that time!, from the bands that i didnt know , kalmah sounded pretty cool, wintersun, and black label society.^^, CoB yeah i love them, at the moment i'm trying to play the solo from towards dead end^^ , would be happy for bands that are like CoB or trivium or whatever just not like Necrophagist/six feet under. i hate such voice^^ :P

Vital Remains has some songs in D standard. you should check them out
#20
Symphony X
Kalmah
Children of Bodom
Norther
Wintersun
Firewind (Sometimes, like Breaking the Silence)
I cant remember the exact tunings they used besides std E, and C flat, but give Black Sabbath a try too.

I mostly know std E, or E flat so...

And you're obviously here because you fancy Phill.
Phill is a very attractive guy...

"I'm so tempted to sig that, Phill" - Sig it then

Unless otherwise stated, assume everything I say is in my opinion.

Death
Necrophagist
Children of Bodom
Shadows Fall
Symphony X
Wintersun
Insomnium
Dark Tranquillity (some stuff I think)

Played D standard for the majority of Paradise Lost. Rest of Symphony X's stuff is usually in E flat standard.

Rock? Oh, the ignorance.

In Flames' first album and EP are in D.
Zyklon's first is in D(don't know about the rest)

That's all I could think of.

Can you explain why they change guitars when it's done live?

Sad But True is Standard D.

Anyway, from what hasn't been mentioned, Exodus' last few albums have been in D Standard. And Mastodon play D Standard too as far as i'm aware. Except a few songs where I think the drop the top string to A.

Yes, Sad But True is in D. I can prove it by telling you to listen to it. It's a very heavy song and there is no way it's in standard E, nor Eb, and it's definitely not in C# or any kind of drop tuning.

Metallica didn't go to Eb 'til Load and didn't start using Drop 'til St. Anger.

EDIT: And to stay on topic, Insomnium play in D Standard.

consider this; metal rhythms mostly use power chords, and with tons of distortion open strings are indecipherable from fretted notes.
thus the only major difference between drop d and d standard is that it's quicker to tune to drop d.
i mean really, who *actually* uses 5th octave e's, or d's, in their leads?

if you're tuned in d standard already, just play your drop d tunes 2 frets higher on every string but your low d.
in fact, now try playing your e standard tunes 2 frets higher on every string.
