Whenever im trying to solo I just use a minor/ pentatonic scale for the key that im in. And im useing power chords. Could someone explain to me when to use minor or major, and when to use scales like dorian, and harmonic minor.

I just go with what I feel. Like if an Am chord is being jammed on I'll cut up the Am pentatonic over it. Don't know to much about modes dude.
