when i do pull-offs i wind up pulling the string so the tone of the note that i want to pull off to is higher than what it should be. i think gripping the fret (that i want to pull off to) harder will fix this problem, but do you guys have any better ideas as to how i should get better at this?

Maybe some speed? But yeah, make sure you press down hard to begin with and then pull it off as quickly as you can. That doesn't always work. Just fiddle around until you get the right sound and PRACTICE IT!!

Wrong. It might simply be that your fretting and playing is too aggressive. Always use the absolute minimum amount of effort you can get away with to play notes - tension holds you back!
