It's near christmas time again and for all musicians that means... yup another piece of kit!
I'm getting a tube amplifier this year only I can't decide between too
the Arbiter SoundCity 40C:
- 40W
- All Tube
- 12AX7 pre-amp tubes
- EL84 power-amp tubes
- 2 x 12" speakers
- Footswitch included
- £400 (about $800)

and

the Laney VC30-212
- 30W
- All Tube
- ECC83 pre-amp tubes
- EL84 power-amp tubes
- 2 x 12" speakers
- Footswitch NOT included (only £15 extra though)
- £375 ($750)

I know that 12AX7s are hi gain tubes & ECC83s are more "vintage" tubes.
Either way I'm going to be buying a tube distortion/overdrive pedal (that houses 2x12AX7s). I was just wondering other than the sound, whats the difference between ECC83 and 12AX7, and which is more reliable?

Any help much appreciated

ECC83s and 12AX7s are exactly the same tubes, 12AX7 being the American tube coding system and ECC83 being the British one.

What do you play?

^I'd let a pro look at it. Once you get into the technicalities of screws...well, it's just a place you don't want to be, friend.

I play varying stuff.
usually classic rock (Hendrix, Zeppelin, Who etc), modern rock (Muse, Chilis) and 80's metal (Iron Maiden, Megadeth).
for the 80's metal I intend to rely on the tube distortion im gonna buy

Well to start with I would recommend the 1x12 V30 and to upgrade the speaker, which isn't too good. It should handle most of what you play...
