Well the singer in my band wants to play guitar as well making it three guitarists and everyone else in the band is ok with it except the bassist. I'm ok with it for some songs but he wants to do this with all of our songs and he wants to be lead guitar. I was just wondering how many bands have the singer play lead guitar when there is another guitar in the band. I'm pretty sure Dave Mustaine is Rhythm guitar.

just play both. If he has a cool solo, let him play it.

Mustaine plays some lead as well.
Paul Gilbert sings sometimes and plays lead guitar.
Muhammed Suicmez from Necrophagist sings and plays lead.
Billy Gibbons in ZZ Top does it as well I believe.

There are tons of people who do it, if he wants to and your band doesn't mind then go for it.

Hendrix was the only guitarist and singer in the Experience (with the exception of back-up vocals and a few songs done by Mitch and Noel). He did fairly well at playing both lead and rhythm while singing.

(Not saying he sang particularly well, but he still did it.)

Three guitars together can sound a mess or make it sound heavier than you ever imagined possible. Let him do it for a while, and if it doesn't work out tell him to stop and focus on singing. Most vocalists are restricted by their guitars anyway, no point having that if it doesn't even make a difference musically.

Oh, Josh Homme. Lead, and damn good at it.

Little-know Adrian Smith and Project did that w/ Adrian Smith (from Iron Maiden) on lead guitars and vocals. Same for his band the Untouchables.. and others he's been in.

And of course Satriani's done it on a few tracks

His songwritings bloody brilliant, but I have to say he's pretty sloppy, and his music is most definitly not considered shredding.

Johnny Thunders (from Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers) played lead and sang. He was definitely right to do it. And personally, I notice the other members of the band, even if they're not the singer or lead guitarist. That's like saying that if the singer isn't playing lead, only the singer and lead guitarist are noticed. Not true.

There's plenty of bands that just have one guitarist who sings as well...and some of them do it really well

Rivers Cuomo, simple leads, but still leads.

anyway, maybe u and ur other guitar player can learn some lead, so the singer
          can focus on singing.
          #33
rhythm guitarists = same thing bassist plays.

they're completely useless unless the lead guitar is seriously ALL LEADS.

          Alexi Laiho obviously
Dave Mustaine shares lead/rhythm with Glen Drover just like MKH shares with Corey Beaulieu
          Necrophagist
          7th Son

but the thing is, all lead singer/lead guitarists SHARE the lead, they don't keep it...except for alexi laiho...because he's cool like that and owns your face

well if hes good theres no reason why you couldnt use three guitarists like maiden do but to me he just wants to be the centre of attention. as a general rule most people in the audience will be looking at the singer most of the time and then the lead guitarist during a solo, as far as i can tell he wants to be looked at the whole time. he sounds like a fag actually you should kick him out

I am disgusted and inulted by your ignorance and stupidity.

Firstly, you assume the bassists and the rhythm guitarist just play root notes and power/bar chords respectivly.

Secondly, they have completely different tones and ranges of pitch, so what sounds good on each is different.

And to the TS, yes three guitars can work (Iron Maiden), but he soundsl ike he just wants to do it to look cool. Tell him to focus on his singing, as unless he is an awful singer or a brillant guitarist, it is better that two guitars play and he sings to the best of his ability.
