On my MIM Strat the frets are kinda ugly. They seems to be flaking or something and are a dull silver color. It may have been my old strings but I did a vibrato and heard a squeaking sound. What should I do to clean up these frets and get them nice and polished for smooth bends? Maple fretboard BTW.

Sorry I'm at work and my camera is not so good with close ups. On a few of the higher frets it seems more like they're coated with something or maybe I'm seeing things. THere's no fret wear though like grooves from strings because it's a fairly new guitar and very lightly used.

it could be a laquer when they sprayed the neck. Is your neck finished?

It's not a gloss finish but does seem to have something on there.
