Not sure if this in the right forum, but anyway...

Anyone know how i could get the tone from Zakk's intro to Mother Mary?

I've heard a few similar sounds, but none quite the same.

Sounds to me like an amp cranked to hell, but i'm running though an original JCM800 100watt head and 4x12 without a hotplate, so thats not an option.

Using a Dean Razorback V255, so EMG 81/85 pickups.#

Thanks

You'll never get the tone you get from a cranked tube amp without having your tube amp cranked, sorry but there are no two ways about it.

Well Zakk uses an overdrive pedal to an already overdriven amp...

Its BLS - Mother Mary, off the album Sonic Brew

It almost sounds as if the amp is cranked so much that the speakers are breaking up too, but not in a ****e way.

Attenuator?

I know the amp would still be cranked, but it means he could get cranked tones at a lower volume. An attenuator seems to be the best option, TS...

I know the hotplate allows the head to be maxed with a low output volume, but i've had the head up full as it is and it still doesn't get that tone.

Ah, maybe you could try using Zakk's OD pedal. I've never tried it myself but i imagine it would get you pretty close...

A decent attenuator will cost him a lot more money, especially one for a 100w tube head. Which I'm not sure if the TS has, maybe, maybe not.

Even then, an attenuator has a tendency to bleed treble, and therefore the higher harmonics within your tone. So, although the good attenuators don't bleed as much treble, they still do, and it won't be the proper tone of a fully cranked tube amp, close, but not the same, it'll lack richness. This said, it does look like the best option in this case.

Anyway, check out a tubescreamer (Ibanez TS808) it might give you the sound you're looking for, might not...

TS, can you maybe do a clip of this song so we can hear what it sounds like?
