How safe is it? I know there are a lot of fakes for Gibson LPs, some strats, and some Ibanez (JEMs), but what about others? I was looking into a few guitars (Gibson Explorer, Jackson SL3) and i've found good prices on ebay. A lot of them say "mint condition" and have a price tag of up to $300 below the new price tag.

How safe is it to buy a guitar like an Explorer or SL3 off the bay?

It's pretty safe. Just make sure the seller has good feedback. You can see a few pics of the item and ask any questions you want to know before buying. If it looks like a dodgy item then stay away. But there is plenty of good buys to be found on ebay. It's a great place to buy and sell guitars

Yamaha Pacifica (For Sale)

Always ask to go and see the guitar before hand to check it plays properly and connects to amps etc. If they won't let you, it might not work properly, so you should stay away unless you want a repair job.

Unless it's a shop, they never let you see the stuff.

A lot of the Explorer ones im seeing show the serial, any blemishes, and the seller has a high (99%+) feedback. That should be safe.

That's bollocks. At this point, all of my guitars are ebayed, along with a ton of other gear I use every day, and so far I never had any problems. It's fairly rare that someone wants to screw you over, and if so, it's usually blatantly obvious. A lot of honest people just use ebay to buy and sell good gear.

I got my guitar half price on ebay because it was a no reserve bid and it had one like teardrop shaped place on it where the paint was gone. It's unless you're really picky; just make sure he ships it properly.

I know what you're saying, but I always ask if I can see the guitar. It isn't always obvious, but you are right, a lot of honest people do use ebay. I have stuff off ebay, but it's nice to be sure, and I was just saying to be prepared that if they refuse to let you see the guitar, it MIGHT be damaged in some way and not to be surprised if you have to do a bit of a repair job. Don't mock me for being careful when it comes to gear.

I built up an ibanez rg project guitar from a neck and body and edge i bought seperately off of ebay. filled it out with parts collecting dust in a drawer in a closet. everything worked out great. however, i parted it back out on ebay because i found a dkmg with a broken headstock on ebay for $175 w/ shipping. since i had my old OFR from 20 years ago, laying in that same drawer, i had to put it to use. so i bought it, and then i bought a dkmg neck off ebay.
and can i say HOLY MOTHER OF GOD!!! this thing is such a dream to play, not to mention it looks freakin' KILLER with the see-thru black. and i love the up-turned head.
anyway, i also bought my mesa 50 cal+ and my mesa v-twin off ebay as well.
the way i see it, i'll NEVER buy brand new ever again.

edit: also, you're in norwalk, ct. so check out newyork.craigslist too. there was a mesa DC 2 on there for $450. there's always nice looking stuff on there

I have bought on Ebay for 12+ years and only had one problem and I used Pay Pal that was recently they refunded me my money all of $7.00.

First I check the feedback and read some of it. Some people leave negative feedback just because they suck and really don't have a legit complaint. So read it. Second before you bid check the shipping costs, third ask questions and for pics if there are not enogh of them. I never buy from people with too many negatives or just not enough to 0 feedbacks with out asking them for more info. Ebay is pretty safe more or less legit sellers make a lot of dough on Ebay and don't want to screw it up. Watch out for shill bidders there are a few sellers out there that use friends to jack up the bidding if they are afraid they'll have to sell too cheap. These guys are trying to get out of Ebay fees by not putting reserve prices and other things Ebay charges for. You'll see a lot of buy it now prices at .99 for a guitar and then shipping will be $200.00 THis is the most blatant way to skirt Ebay fees because Ebay does not charge a fee for shipping. I report stuff like that. If you buy something for .99 and it's you could loose your money you shelled out for shipping if there is a dispute. If you bid decide on exactly what your willing to spend and do not get caught up in a bidding war. You could end up paying too much for something just because you get pissed someones out bidding you. I use Pay Pal for all my Ebaying. Most of the time I will not bid unless the seller takes PP on a few rare occasions I did send payment thru the mail. Use Postal MO they are the safest. It's mail fraud and a Federal offense if someone takes the PO MO and cashes it with out sending you something. You can file a complaint with the PO and they do investigate most people that do this just don't do it to one person. I have gotten some great deals on Ebay actually all my stuff were good deals IMHO. The second online buying I have had the best luck is is with Craigs but with that buy only local and meet the person and see what your buyong before you hand over your cash. I got three awesome deals on Craigs A DEAN ML Noir, Epi Firebrid and DEAN V for less than $100.00 ea. A few cases for less than $25.00 ea and one Coffin case for $50.00.

I hope this helps. Just use caution when bidding like I said 12+ years with only one problem and I have bought about 130 items and I have 100% good feedback. I never sold anything on Ebay though.

Ebay has guides for checking if the guiter is fake or not; though the question is how good the guides are : (.

Anyway you should ask for the serial # to check it out. That would help. Make sure to ask questions how how many owners, what year, etc, etc.

Good luck!

its been my experience that its pretty easy to determine if a seller is legit. for one thing they should gleefully and promplty answer any, and as many of the dumbest questions you might be able to conjure.
if there are any doubts, then i would ask the seller what his/her policy is if the item arrives in a condition other than what was advertised
fakers are easy to spot.
