Is it possible to use active pickups (such as EMGs 81/85) passively? Would it ruin the tone of them at all?

yeah, wouldnt get any sound, theyr powered thru with a battery (ie active), where normaly theyr powered thru the amp (passive). But you could try the EMG HZs, theyr passive. Duno how they sound tho, alexi laiho uses em tho, so cant be that bad. But id jsut get an 81/60 pair, that way you can still get a gd clean sound

You can't use active EMGs as passive pups but I think some companies do actives that can be run passive in case your battery runs out but obviously the output will be lower and possibly the tone will be different/worse.

Cyrus-602: The signal is not powered by the pickups: you still need to have it amplified active pickups have a small preamp inside the pickups run by the battery which also boosts output.

HZ's don't compare at all to actual active EMG's. Laiho runs his guitar through lots of effects and such. Run a pair of HZ's through a normal amp, and they won't sound too great. Well, IMO, anyway.

I do agree with the 81/60 set.

So how would an 81/60 or 81/85 set sound through a Marshall 100watt MG series amp?

Detail: The pickups will sound awful becauise the amp is awful, the amp doesn't have the sensitivity to pick up the difference in tone and they'll just end up sounding like every other guitar played through it.

That good enough?

Well he may very well do but all of the recorded material is using EMGs.

Actives should sound fine through your MG, but they might overdrive the preamp and make it from a steaming pile of turds into a jagged, screechy feedback of death pile of turds.

Well not really...they'll sound just as fine as anything else through it so I say give up on EMGs and get a good amp!

Active pickups might make the preamp overdrive, because they have a stronger signal. That makes them distort, and transistors rarely overdrive nicely.

I got HZ's in my Epiphone lp-100...and they make my seymour duncans
in my Idol sound like stock pickups. They sound great through my spider.
If I want to show off and go into orbit my RP-350 can transform them from
passive to active or even to a single coil.

They guy that put them in my guitar at the guitar shop was alone when
he did the job. I picked it up a few days later and some other guys were
working that day. They asked me if they were active. They couldnt even
tell the difference. You can always buy a preamp...it doesnt have to be
built in. If actives are your style i think thats cool. It doesnt matter how
you get there...as long as you find your sound..thats all that matters.

I suggest going to some open mics or bars where some really experienced
musicians play....and see what they can do with different kinds of equipment.
Actives are cool...but they might not be the thing thats giving you the tone
that you desire.

Active pups have built in preamps...and they need eletricity to run. The preamp
inside does not have a bypass like some of your pedals. The sound has to travel
through the preamp. No preamp...no sound.

Yeah, the point is that they were of the EMG brand, not the Seymour Duncan Blackouts he is known to use at the moment.
