The Melvins ARE grunge.
I really love Alice in Chains.
If you want to dig a little deeper into the alternative college radio that inspired grunge, than listen to Sonic Youth, and the Pixies.
Oh, Soundgarden are regarded as one of the greater grunge bands, so give them a shot. They're not my personal favourite though.

Yeah, definitely Alice In Chains.
I wouldn't say the Pixies, bt Sonic Youth is great, too.
Pearl Jam's "Vs." is a fantastic album.
Tori Amos is pretty good, too, though she's a bit less grunge.
Hole and L7 are great as well.

Basically, if you need a random grunge band to listen to, watch Beavis and Butthead.
It's hard to go wrong.
The Whale Of Woe of the Primus Sucks Club. PM StratEnRegalia to join.

Green River. Had members that would go on to form mudhoney and pearl jam.

Yeah, the pixies and sonic youth had a large influence on the grunge movement. As did Dinosaur jr.

Give Tad a listen, they're often overlooked

gotta expect to hear nirvana they practically came up with grunge.

Wrong.

Nirvana made 'grunge' popular. Similar style rock music was around for years.

Anyway, threadstarter, Dinosaur Jr. and the Screaming Trees are pretty good.
