Need something to lasT? Jackson. Stretch your budget to $630 and you could get a DK2M or DK2. Both are awesome, high quality, Made in Japan guitars that you will have for a long time.

Id go with a Gibsom SG Faded. About $580, and isnt too bad. I think Epi LP Customs are about that much, and actually might be better than the Gibson. I think Epi Sheratons are good as well, and have P-90s. Maybe try out an Iceman from Ibanez, one of the $550 ones. Pretty good guitars, and they look amazing.

i'd say either schecter or ibanez...maybe an SZ520 or SZ720, i know the 520 runs about $550 not sure on the 720 though.

Is this US $ or....?

If you cannot find the Ibanez SZ520, look for an Ibanez SZ320 + Pickup swap, or an Ibanez SZ720FM. They are truly great guitars IMO for hard rock.

Alternatively, check out Schecter C1 Artist / Blackjack, both models are pretty good.

Its not discontinued, its on Musiciansfriend.com for $529.99 (I know you said you didn't want to buy it online, but most Ibanez dealers could order you one for about that price if you really wanted it)

jacksons are good, but better IMO are the LTD 400 series. quite amazing quality, a big bunch of pros use them, and are generally pretty damn nice.

Not quite. It's the Casino that's got the P-90s (it's also a full hollow, so there's some feedback issues. I'm still getting one, though). Still, the Sheraton would be a damn good buy.

jackson over LTDs hands down. Way better quality. +1 for the DK2M, i preferred it to an ESP M-II which is an ESP standard.

Seriously, go the jackson mate, you wont be disappointed.
ESP CUSTOM SHOP HORIZON
FENDER USA STRAT
JACKSON DK2M

Most pros would probably choose ESP over LTD models

But for the price, LTD's are damn good. And Pros usually have more then $600 to spend. Anyway, ESP's (and I'm pretty sure Schecters) aren't available at brick and mortar Guitar Centers but at smaller mom-and-pop stores. If you like Schecter necks (they're pretty controversial) then this guitar would be perfect, since it's a bit more versatile than EMG equipped ESPs (though if you don't mind a full clean...). Otherwise, a Viper 400/H-500/EC-400 or 500 would be very good choices.
As for Jackson...like any brand you have to try them out. I liked this one in particular, but they just don't offer quite the value IMHO.

hey guys i'm in the same situation. $600 max that i can spend on a guitar. i play metal mostly (metallica, trivium, bullet for my valentine, machine head, etc.) and classic rock (ozzy, kansas, boston, etc.). i was looking at the Ibanez S520EX and it looks really good. plus it's on sale for $400 from $600. but i was looking and there is a new ibanez that just came out, the RGR320EX for $600 and it's pretty much the same guitar except the pickups are actually EMGs instead of EMG-esque...i think. this will be my first big guitar purchase. i intend on buying a dean this summer but my strat broke so i need one asap. i'm open to anything...esp, ibanez, dean, schecter, jackson i guess.

Differences between the guitars:
RG: 24 frets, basswood, fixed bridge
S: 22 frets, mahogany, ZR trem.

And the pickups are not "actually EMGs", they are "Designed by EMG". "Designed by" means "cheaper and not as good as the original."

what's the difference between basswood and mahogany, as well as every other type? is it just a preference thing, or is there an actual better kind?
