it just would't ring as much, right?

It should sound a bit similar, that extra note is the octave above the open G

Yeah, it would sound the same, it would just sound fuller because the extra note you added was just an octave above the open note.

Learn then, being a bassist you need to learn just as much as a guitarists should because chord tones are used a lot in coming up with basslines that contain more than just root notes.
