Audacity and Reaper are free, with no demo crap, just straight free.

Almost as convenient as Wikipedia, but infinitely more hipster, Dover.

If you really want to buy one, I suggest investing in Reason. That one was a particularly good program.

If not, Audacity is also pretty good, and free, just make sure you have a good mic to get all your music on there so it doesn't sound like complete crap.

Reason is my favorite piece of software, but it doesn't do recording, which is the only thing TS asked for.

Logic Studio is the best DAW out there right now.
