Who is making the hot bass cabs now and what is the current trend in speaker config?
4 x 10 or 2 x 10 plus 1 x 15 used to be the trend when I was gigging ten + years ago.
Is this still state of the art?
Trend? I'm not sure there's a particular trend so to speak. It's all down to personal opinion. I think Ashdown are making the 'hot' bass cabs and combos, etc. I honestly don't know about the speaker sizes, want more low end- 1x 15", want more highs/mids 4x 10". Down to the person.
Okay, get back in your time machine and go back to your own decade! Anyway, speaker setups are basically the same as they have always been, and always will be: personal preference. If you want an 8x10 be my guest if you want a 2x10 be my guest if you want a 1x21 and a 10x6 go right ahead.
Markbass is pretty hot right now, small yet powerful
Washburn RB2500 (5 String)
Yamaha BB400 Fretless (1981)
Carlo Giordano 3/4 Upright (White)
Cort Action 4 (Stereo-fied)
Orange Bass Terror 500
Orange 1x15 Cab
Boss GT-6 Bass Multi-effects
Markbass are getting raves, especially with their small but impressive heads.

Neodyum (spelling?) speakers are all the rage now with larger cabinets too. makes them ever so lighter but just as powerful
