Hey, are there any guitarists out there who are pretty well know, but you just don't like thier guitar tone? For me, I think Paul Gilbet is an amazing player, but I can't stand his tone, it just sound overl trebley and nasal.

Got anything like this?

^O rly? I actually like the tone off Justice. Oh well, to each his own. As far as other tones I don't like, I really don't like the tone on the Album version of Red House by Jimi Hendrix. I't's weird, I like Hedrixes tone on his other sonds, but Red House just sounds bad witht the tone he uses.

I personally think PG's tone is amazing. A few of his videos have have a very shrilly-overly treble tone, though.

I'm not much of a fan of Petrucci's tone.

It's not great on his albums, but I can barely stand to listen to his videos it's so bad.

clapton's tone post cream. basically from early 70's to now. i love strats to death but his tone sounds like the distortion channel on my 15watt fender amp.
#14
Alexi Laiho's tone. Way too trebly and the overdrive is grainy. Kinda lacks that thump to it too. Dunno why kids would wanna emulate his tone though :x

And....

Eddie Van Halen's lead tone. Sure I have a 5150, but still i find his lead tone to be sooo trebly and shrill, again with a grainy sounding drive. So much for the "brown sound"

I'm not a fan of Eric Johnson's when he's got his compression and distortion way up. His cleans are nice though, for sure.

I don't like Petrucci or Malsteem's either.

True, he probably would. But i'm just not a fan of his intensely effected tone. I jam with a guy who's met him and chatted with him, he's hella into effects, a big techie.

In my opinion, in the video's I've heard, his guitar sounds like the synth from the original Mario Brothers when hella distorted. I mean don't get me wrong...its original and cool sounding...but its a bit thin for my tastes. Its like playing metal on a jazz guitar, with treble rolled down.

+1 to whoever said Van Halen.

About Malmsteen's tone, it sounds okay on the albums, but I think it sounds amazing live (referring mostly to Trial By Fire and the G3 he was at)

Whoever said Alexi Laiho, his tone is a little wierd, but I still like it. His leads sound very strange, kind of like he was trying to get something that would go well/sound like a keyboard.

I love petrucci's tone...

Kirk Hammett's tone is really wahful
Dimebag's is incredibly thin
Static X has a pretty bad tone too... Marshall MGs...
Zakk Wylde has an awful tone, no matter what amp he uses, it still sounds like a cheap solid state.

I'll have to say Dave Mustaine too. His lead tone really blows.

I'll also have to add Herman Li, overkill on the digital by way too much.

Stadium Arcadium. The same tone on each solo.

Your kidding right?
C'mon girl - Reversed reverb - trebly
Especially in michigan - huge mids
slow cheetah - possibly using neck/middle pickup combo

The tones are VERY different on a lot of the songs, although some have very similar tones.

Yeah Alexi's more recent tone on Are You Dead Yet? is really awful.. it puts me off listening to it. If he recorded the album with a better sound I'd probably listen to it more, but it's just crap to be honest. Oh well.
#39
Eric Johnson's tone sounds dead to me (yes, I realise everyone but me loves it). Jimmy Page's tone sounds like a bunch of bees in a tin can. Any of the oversaturated thick muddy tones that seem to be so popular these days (primarily Mesa/Boogie, it seems), or the shallow, thin, ear-piercing tones most Marshalls these days produce.
He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt.
