My Aunt just got a mac lap top and is convinced that she can somehow pick up an internet signal from other users around her (neighbors, etc) without having to pay for an internet service. She also believes that she could somehow pick up our DSL signal and use the internet here on her own computer. Is this true, and if so, how does it work?

If your neighbors have a router, yes, illegally, she could pick up their wireless signal. If you have a router, she could pick up your connection easily, but you need a wireless router (broadcasts the internet connection's wireless signal for computers) for any laptop to wirelessly connect.

Yea, you can pick up other signals from unsecured wireless routers, but it is illegal unless its a legitimate public wi-fi access.
