My computer has a label stating it holds a 160GB HD but when I click the properties of the drive its showing a total of 142GB. Same goes for all the computers I have ever used.

So why is it thats the storage is always lower than stated?

The operating system and the programs that came with the computer (and possibly a recovery partition) take away from the 160 GB your HD started out with.
