A really basic (and dirt cheap) setup would be:

Guitar > Multi-FX pedal/Amp with line out/anything that can be used as a pre-amp > Cable with one 1/4 inch jack and one 1/8 jack > Line In (or mic possibly) socket of your soundcard > Audacity (Download for free)

I would do that first and if you want to spend a little bit of money:

Guitar > (FX) > Amp > Mic (Shure SM57 is your best bet) > Audio Interface (There are lots) > Whatever software comes bundles with the interface or Audacity

If you have any effects pedals it would be worth trying them,a dn the cable you need should cost hardly anything.

And if you want drums search Hydrogen on google, it's a decent free drum machin you can use to make drum tracks.

I'd recommend Reaper instead of Audacity. It's free as well.
