So,

I have a melody in 6/8 for my Higher Music course at school. I have it played on a violin, and I want to stick a simple strumming pattern on guitar behind it (as we're meant to have chords underneath melody).

Any ideas for an even strumming pattern that won't p*ss all over the melody?

1 eighth 4 sixteenths, 1 eighth 4 sixteenths, rinse and repeat.
4/4 is just so boring. <_<

Tried that, sounds bad because I have a really high tempo (8th notes at 240).

My bad, I should have mentioned the quick pace.

ohh, i'd go with dotted quarters, or eighths then.

Yeah, that sounds good, although in the 4th bar I'm using 3 quarter notes add some variation as it's returned to the I chord.

3 quarter notes in 6/8? Weird. Does your melody sound good with that?

I noticed that some people recommended dotted quarter notes... This is 6/8 time, only two dotted quarter notes fit in a bar. I think what you meant was a quarter note, and then an eighth for a swing feeling.

6/8 is felt as two likeso:

1 2 3 4 5 6

so just play dotted quarters on the 1 and 4.

Play Meshuggah. It is the solution.

1 & 2 & 3 | 1 & 2 & 3| Repeat

at 240 bpm id suggest strum 2 3- 4 5 6 ,1 2 3 strum 5 6 (2nd strum being optional ) for the bar of 3/4 try single notes ? or strum+2+3 +

(count the beats you dont play !! )

so say the above a few times (aloud ) then try to say and play !

Yup, 3 quarter notes. Sounds more intense, imo sounds fine.

If you played gave the pulse to three quarter notes with regularity you would no longer be in 6/8 and fail your course
