ok so I dont want to crank the volume too much for the overdrive, so what pedal would be good? also where does it connect to the guitar or to the back where it says effects loop?

An overdrive pedal goes best between the guitar and the amp. I use an Ibanez TS808 with mine, and am very pleased with the results. You'll get a lot of votes for the Fulltone OCD in here, too.

I find the master on the AC30 to be pretty decent, though. If you're playing at home, I'd think you could scale it back and get some decent OD without a pedal at low volumes.

The FX loop is better for modulation effects like chorus, delay, phaser, etc.

At home, dial it all the way back until you just get some sound out of it. Adjust to as loud as your allowed.

Damn, at gigs I don't get the master up above about a third of the way up!
