I'm doing an art project, and it's going great except for getting the desired effect for a certain area of the painting I'm doing. Basically, it's an area and in the distance is a large flash. However, I noticed while it looks good, it looks like the a sunset, and that's just gay. But seriously, a sunset isn't the desired effect I want. Here is a roughly done in 5 minutes replica of the painting:

I tried to think of what I could do to make it look more like a flash, a flash with a lot of force. I make the trees closer to it being bent over, but it still looks like a sunset. So I tried to see what it looked like with rays coming out of it.

Still kinda looks like a sun, so I experimented with extending the bottom sides:

And a friend told me to make little electricity bolt things in the backround and stuff flying out of it, so what the hell:

It still isn't looking quite like I wanted to, so any art inclined people, or anybody for that matter, could you give me ideas to make it look like I wanted it to?

dunno if this helps, but i would try to sort of blur everything around the flash almost as if you had tears in your eyes from all the heat exploding out of it. dunno how you would do that though ;P

complementary colors, and don't do it in mspaint.

I have an idea that I learned from a book about comic book art. Try making some straight lines extending from the sphere of the blast of alternating light and dark colors, with the dark ones being thinner. I'll try to find a picture of what I mean.

EDIT: There's some of it in here

I've already painted it with the colors shown in the pictures I posted, I just need something to add.

Also, it's being done in acrylic if that helps any.

Ok, or if you just want to take my picture in paint and add them there that would really help.

I did a little something to it that made it not look like a sun and more like a flash/explosion type thing, but I don't know how to post pics..

I didn't do a perfect job, but with some good color blending, I think you'll pull it off. You should get the general idea.

Sorry if I'm being to picky or whatever. That does really make it look good, but it makes the explosion seem to close. I want it to look really distant to where you can just see the light coming from it.

I agree with you there. Maybe make the lines shorter? Perhaps try to make them extend in a way that make some of them look like they're coming across the landscape toward the viewer?
#13
Ok, I just added some lines that kinda made it look different.

I still would need to add some more though. Also the project is an actual painting for anyone who didn't catch it.

thick and thin lines extending from the flash all the way to the end of the page. also, thick shadow lines on the ground to show the light is eminating from somewhere on earth, not far off in the sky.

In the actual picture the trees have shadows and I'm going to try it make like snow is blowing away from the flash, I just have to figure out how.

I might have an idea for the snow effect. Have some wisps of snow running along the ground with it coming up in clouds at the edge of the circumference. This should make it look like a shockwave is running along the ground.

This avalanche picture somewhat demonstrates what I'm talking about. Try to imagine the snow in a broader, more circular pattern.
EDIT:
The top picture on this blast wave strip looks a bit like what I was intending. If you could make the clouds further from the blast, it might give you the effect you want.

still don't quite get what kind of idea you are wanting.

i have it in paint, i'll mess with it and come up with some ideas.

do you think you could describe better what kind of flash you're wanting?
like an explosion or what?

That looks really good. If you add more clouds all the way around, the effect might look even better.
#21
no, not exactly. extend those all the way to the end of the page, but put them behind the mountans and such, obviously. also, make the shadow thick lines, almost like bars, which also extend toward the bottom of the page.

clincher, you just don't get it.
imagine you cut out strips of black pieces of paper, and white pieces of paper. position the white strips so they extend all the way to the ends of the page, radiating up and out from the sun-like object. then, take the black/grayish (shadows, get it?) pieces of paper and position them radiating down and out from the sun-like object. no more of that spray paint stuff.
#29

Thats a bit overdramatic for what your doing, but it should give you an idea of where to start, and then you can build up from there.

Or at least it should help the other clarify what they mean.

I do get it, and I tried it, and it looked ridiculous. The explosion would look way too close. I've already got it figured out.
