I was born with inward crooked pinky. The tip is only part crooked. I'm thinking about having it broke and reset to help my guitar playing, but I'm scared to. I'm losing about 1-2 fret distance. I should be able to play Rock and Roll by LedZep with my thumb on top of the neck instead of behind it... What do you guys think?
I spelled my own name wrong... "Sixthy" how stupid.

my pinkys are like that too. i guess if you're playing technical stuff it can hinder you. i've thought about it but i thought the benefits didn't outweigh getting my finger broken. i mostly play punk and hardcore anyways so its really no problem for me

I dont know dude, i mean even if you do it, lets be honest, will you ever be a pro guitar player? no offense, but prolly not. I wouldnt do it.

It's not about becoming pro it's about playing the stuff I like. Which is Zeppelin. I feel like my pinky is hindering me badly, but maybe I just need some patience

it doesn't matter if he becomes pro or not!
thats just insane and i doubt it would really help all that much.
but if you do decide to do it, you should have a medical professional do it.

i'm pretty sure Django Reinhardt ( probly spelt it wrong) lost two of his fingers in a fire and he is one of the best Jazz guitarists ever, so you COULD still be great whether you break your pinky or not, i guess it just comes down to whether you think it would function better reset or how it is now.

Maybe this pinky problem could be the key to YOUR style. Something unique.
Alos how long have you been playing. I've been playing a few years at first my hands couldn't even stretch far enough to play a C chord but over time they have stretched out pretty well.
Breaking your pinky is pretty extreme, thats like those women so desperate to becomae flight attendants they break their legs and spend months in hospital having them lengthened. Also you would probably lose a lot of strenght in your pinky. Do you really want that?

I broke and dislocated my pinky over a year ago and the muscle hasn't come back - luckily it was on my right hand, not my left. If Iommi can play with two fingers, you can play with 3

They don't put you under for doing small bones. He'll have a splint on his pinky finger and won't be able to play until it's out of the splint. Try taping a slide to your finger and playing.. you'll see how easy it is. Not to mention the pain factor, unless you think that playing while under the influence of painkillers is productive or easy.

Honestly it sounds like you're trying to rationalize your inability to play. You're only limiting yourself. Your body is not the problem. You have to learn to overcome difficult things in life, this may be one of them. Yes, it's different, yes, it makes it hard, but no you don't have to break your finger and have it re-set to play guitar properly.

People who truly love guitar find a way around their physical problems to play and compose. Iommy, Reinheart (sp?) are just two examples. How about Jason Becker? He was fully paralyzed and he persevered and found a way to continue playing. He couldn't even physically play a guitar and he still made music.

You'll see once you continue playing that you'll learn to stretch and adapt your playing to meet your needs. I have very small hands. They're relatively small, even for someone of my stature (5'6") I can still play complex chords and hit hard to reach notes. Why? Because I adapted. I learned to stretch or play the song differently. You can do this too. All it takes is practice.

Also, if you have the procedure done be aware that arthritis can, and most times will, set in either now or at some point as you get older.

Just a thought.

My pinky is slightly inward and I think your being really dumb.
It doesnt really hinder you your just making an excuse for not playing well.

Practice.

Play bass. It helps you really get those stretches down. Also, if you masturbate with the opposite hand than you normally do, it helps technique in general.

Both of my pinky fingers are messed up like that, it is a little bit of problem at first. The thing to do is to just keep playing and use it all the time and get used to stretching it.

Don't blame your pinky on the fact that you suck.... just face it... you suck. Keep practicing and in time you will suck less.

You could always do that

ah, enough being insensitive...how can yu even imagine doing something like that just to enhance your guitar playing a tiny bit...practice will help a lot more...
and so what if you cant do massive stretches? Its not such a big deal...guys wit normal hands can have problems with them as well
I've developed a complex where everytime I hear a Lamb of God song, I burst out laughing
