lol. if you're talking about those things they have in their ears while they are playing live. it's so they can hear themselves instead of having foldbacks because foldbacks can be hard to hear when you have 100 watt tube amps, a hard hitting drummer and a 400watt bass amp behind you and your trying to hear out of foldbacks. alot of modern bands use them these days instead of foldbacks.

sorry, i didnt realise that there was a picture there, took a whlie to load, yes, they are in ear monitors so they can hear themselves and other instruments.

Yeah, its either what the above posters have said, or it could be just hearing protection. But in your picture i would say its an in-ear monitor.

they're secret agents. but they couldn't afford the smaller ones so their enemies can easily spot them.

Yep. in-ear monitors. Got fitted for my second pair today. They cut out dangerous noise frequencies while still allowing you to hear each instrument clearly.

They aren't that expensive, go from about £300 UK upwards round here. They're just a bit of a pain unless you're in a venue with a decent system.

If you don't need ones that are fitted for your ears, you can also get some of the models which just have interchangeable tips (different size/hardness/materials). I'd say typical prices for those range from about 50 to 400 USD/EUR. Personally I have a pair or Shure E4 IEMs, I really like them.

they also often connect it to a mic backstage so that roadies can communicate if something goes wrong and they need to stall or something. although most of the time the roadie just shouts.

I think they are used in the way that you hear the mixed sound, so every one on stage can have a individual mix. Louder bass, less vocals etc. This eliminates the use of unnecesery speakers on stage.

So they can hear them selfs and to cut back on hearing loss.

how the hell do they cut back on hearing loss with that ?
i believe earplugs are approximatly a 1000 times louder to the ears than a stereo (or monitors is this case)

you tellin' me that using those monitor-plugs to hear yourself is better for the hearing than using ordinary monitors on the ground + earplugs to protect the hearing ??

well it may be louder than a stereo, but its certainly quieter than 3 full stacks. What it does is completely block out outside noise (in most cases), and then projects the mic'd sound into the in ear monitor, so you hear it at a quieter level. It also can emphasize different instruments/vocals, so you can hear just yourself or atleast make your vocals louder. Its very useful and definitely does not cause hearing loss.
