Hey, this is for a friend who doesn't really know what he wants, and I can only help him out so much. He wants to spend under 500, so somewhere in the lows 400's (or even cheaper, of course). Anyway, he plays hardcore punk, alternative, indie rock, so he's looking for good cleans but able to get a damn good distortion too. He's playing a Peavey Tele knockoff. He wants it semi portable, so no stacks (I saw some for under $500), able to gig with, and have decent effects built in. I've been thinking combo amp, at least 60W, somewhere in 75W to 100W ideally. I'm also thinking Solid State just as far as price is concerned, but if there's a good tube that will be loud for the price and be able to get those tones please let me know. (Blues Jr?)

Thank you all for any help.

EDIT: Oh, almost forgot, going to that Guitar Center sale tomorrow, so any 500 dollar amp will ring up as about 400. Thanks.

vo DA valvetronics serires... the 50w is about $400 i think... its not solid state but it is a great loud tube amp. there are 11 built in fx with three parameters each... great amp.

Yeah, that's alright, if there's a good tube amp for about 400 then please, suggest. However, the Vox AD Valvetronix are hybrids, the tube is in the preamp, so it's not really a tube amp. Also, would 50w be enough for gigging, with a 5-piece band?

Peavey Valveking 50 watt 112 tube combo, $429 USD. Worth a look.

+1.

Or you know...maybe a Bogner Uberschall or something. I think that fits right in the budget.
