Hey! Welcome to the world of slap bass! I'm actually in the same position as you, and have actually been playing slap bass for about 6 months maybe?

Anyways, I'd start out with just randomly making a groove, or try some Red Hot Chili Peppers songs (it seems crazy, but there are a few with non-crazy slap parts). One of my first real slap parts was "Naked in the Rain." Easy to learn, fun to play (and don't bother trying it in dropped D; standard tuning sounds fine). As you get better, try some more complex stuff, like "Can't Stop," "Storm in a Teacup," or develop a double-thumb technique, like in "Higher Ground." However, do not step anywhere near Les Claypool's stuff, or Victor Wooten's. Keep practicing, and in no time, you'll be really good at it! Maybe you'll end up like this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMzXtizKcXY
