Do they organize sounds? Yes.

Therefore, yes they are musicians.

musician

noun
1. someone who plays a musical instrument (as a profession)
2. artist who composes or conducts music as a profession

They fit the second meaning. So yes.

some do, others like myself have tracks on the laptop and dont even have to fade them in or out (like party music). Im a musician anyway so im cool but party djs not sure, dj shadow yes because he manipulates and arranges the music.

Yes.
I have a personal bias because I work with alot on electronical music in my spare time. In my opinion, performing live with a laptop, sampler, tape machine, or turntables as your instrument is just as hard as playing your guitar. You have to have an amazing sense of timing. If you go to a club or a dance, watch to see what the DJ is doing. The ones who are just putting on the next song aren't real DJ's. DJ's are the ones who are generating the songs, or mixing two songs together in real time. Artists such as Daft Punk, the Chemical Brothers, and MSTRKRFT, or even Depeche Mode to some extent are all DJ's.

what I find most shocking is that there's only been one "no" in this thread so far... yet if you were to ask the question, "should hip-hop artists be considered musicians?", you'd get a million people calling you retarded for even asking.

Mastering your instrument is being able to play whatever you hear in your head, unhindered by inadequate technique. After that, it's all about what you've got to say, so there would be no "best," just a bunch of people saying exactly what they mean.

I've always considered it the other way around. The first dj, radio djs, just prepared the next song. I think there should be a different label for musicians such as Daft Punk and the Chemical Brothers, but then again, I'm not the most knowledgeable person on the subject.

I'm not talking about genre, I'm talking about titles, like guitarist or musician. DJ just doesn't cut it for me. Besides isn't electronica misused much anyways?

not really i think its fairly accurate in a way, electronica implies a computer based sound.

No, they play RECORDED music. They are nothing more than a human jukebox. I'm not saying it doesn't take skill to be a DJ, but I don't consider them musicians.

Well you could say the same about Bach compared to a classical pianist who only plays his work. He was highly original in sound and the person playing the pieces is just copying the music note for note and putting no artistry into it.

They still do things to it. Unless we're talking about radio DJs.
