Hey there,

I play mainly hard rock and metal but also play quite a bit of clean stuff.

Do you think the Vox AD50VT2-XL would be a good choice?

Are there any other better amps which are under ₤280/$575?

Thanks for the help.

you could do a lot worse than a valveking for £280, if you ask me. EDIT: you'd need to try it to see if it gets metal enough for you, though.
I'm an idiot and I accidentally clicked the "Remove all subscriptions" button. If it seems like I'm ignoring you, I'm not, I'm just no longer subscribed to the thread. If you quote me or do the @user thing at me, hopefully it'll notify me through my notifications and I'll get back to you.

I'll have to put the Classic T models on my to-try list. Shame the finish options there are Anachronism Gold, Nuclear Waste and Aged Clown, because in principle the plaintop is right up my alley.

Presumably because the CCF (Combined Corksniffing Forces) of MLP and Gibson forums would rise up against them, plunging the land into war.

Can the Vox AD50VT2-XL get good clean sounds?

So really the AD50VT is good for cleans and mild distorsion, Roland Cube 60 for heavy distortion and the AD50VT2-XL is trying to compromise but really not that good at either heavy or clean?

Spot on for the first two. But the XL is just made to be a more metal oreintated version, there's 500 zillion high gain settings. About 3 usable ones and 2 clean settings that both are impossible to get a good sound with.

i'm just worried how well those laneys are going to do the higher gain sounds. they'll do low to mid gain extremely well for the price, but if you do mainly play metal (or even quite a bit of metal, even if it's not your main genre) you might be disappointed.

while i'd probably agree the vc15 is a better amp than a valveking, if versatility is your main concern, the valveking probably pips it, IMO.

The amp doesn't have to be TOO versatile.

My main priority is the metal/hard rock tone.

The clean doesn't have to be perfect.

name a couple of bands you consider metal and hard rock, and whose tones you'd like to get close to.

Mainly Metallica and Trivium, but also metalcore stuff like Avenged Sevenfold and Bullet for my Valentine.

I also like Matt Bellamy's distorted, fuzz tone.

Valveking then, I tried and bought one after comparing it to the Laney VC30 and Peavey Windsor.

The Laney VCs are nice amps, but not really for the tones you (or I) am looking for. I've tried a Laney LC15R extensively and am not a fan of it tbh.

For the Bellamy fuzz tone though I expect any of these amps would need a fuzz pedal like a Big Muff.
Schecter C1 Classic Left Handed
Line 6 POD HD500
Peavey Valveking 112

yeah, probably a valveking. windsor would probably do it too, but then you're tied into getting a cab from somewhere. there's always the windsor studio combo, but no-one has tried it, and also it's anyone's guess if it'll actually be released this side of 2010.

Big muff wouldnt get close to bellamy

He USED to use a fuzz factory for a few songs.

But as far as I know he mostly uses straight up amp distortion.

IMO the sound control is better than the VK. Plus it isnt only available in ridiculous wattages.

Do you think the Peavey Valveking 112 can get the distorted sounds I want? I'm not too bothered about getting the Bellamy sound though.

Also, what are its clean sounds like?
#21
i have a VK
cleans are amazing for what you pay but id say get a pedal. the distortion is a bit muddy and pretty hard to get that bullet trebbly tone.
#22
Hmmmmmm....yeah, that's what I've been reading in some reviews.

It can't get those treble metalcore tones.

A used jcm900 would be better than a valveking IMO
