Hello, everyone. I've been attempting to teach myself to play guitar, but I really don't know where to start or what to do. I know a bit, because i had to learn some stuff for a class presentation. All I know are a few chords, though.

So, i'd like to ask if anyone has recommendations on what to start off with. What to study, what to practice, any advice, or anything else...

Learn scales, chords. Play along with some songs until you have a bit of dexterity.

I would start from the extreme basics teach yourself the name of the strings then teach your self tabs and the tab symbols like P.M= Palm Mute etc..................

I'd say to just start out with the basics, chords, and then start practising songs with that are all chords. There's a guy on youtube, his name is Justin Sandercore I think, he has awesome guitar lessons, I learned a lot from him. And here are some beginner's tabs:

I'd say after you practice chords and go through some of Justin's lessons, pick out songs from there you like, and are easy, don't start off playing something that's too hard. And gradually start moving up.

cheers.

ok basicaly i learned through this site... But first u have to get sumone to teach u to read tab. Its simple but its easier to learn with sumone showing you(it takes like 5 min to learn) then u should try downloading a guitar pro or power tab program(their a lot easier for beginners instead of learning a song without knowing how it goes. then all u gotta do is find some pretty simple songs and work your way up

Yeah, I learned with a teacher (witch is a good bet for the basics, if it isn't a financial burden), but if you can try to make sence out of this:

Guitar tablature:

Guitar tablature II:

Tablature Definitions:

If you can make sence out of that, then you probably can read tablature.
Then you can start checking out harder lessons here:

cheers man.

Thanks for the info, guys. Especially the links. Much appreciated.
Seems like i've been on the right track then. I've been practicing basic chords and a song or two... i'll just keep at what i've been doing, then.
