Could anyone recommend me some instrumental music that is sad and moody sounding. I don't mind if it's electronic, orchestral, film scores, post-rock whatever just something that would fit an apocalyptic scene in a movie.

Anything by the god that is "Nobuo Uematsu" should fill this criteria. I mean, the man can display any kind of mood in a catchy melody. Give him a look.

Hate to be cliche' but...
Some of Trent Reznor's old stuff, early to pre-With Teeth NIN has some good instrumentals, check maybe on The Fragile, maybe 'The Frail', or 'Pilgrimage' comes to mind.

Check out Veritas, Aquitas by Darkest Hour. It's almost 13 minutes long, but the last 7 minutes or so is really dark and sad sounding. Plus it has an awesome guitar solo.

"Alone and Unaware, the Landscape Transformed Before Our Eyes"- Red Sparowes

Trust me. Almost all of their "At the Soundless Dawn" could fit that theme, because it's all great and insturmental.

A lot of instrumental post rock and post metal couls fit your needs.

maybe some godspeed you! black emperor - something off the slow riot ep or f#a#infinity (east hastings is also featured in 28 days later). thats what I'd go for. If you wanted something heavier I recommend Red Sparowes or Pelican, although I'd definitely say godspeed was more apocalyptic.
Pleased to meet you, hope you guess my name.

Yeah I have a few post-rock/metal bands like GSY!BE, ASMZ, ISIS. That stuff is good, but I also want some less rock based music.

The whole of Jeff Beck's Blow by Blow and Wired albums.

Some Pink Floyd stuff (Interstellar Overdrive, Saucerful of Secrets, One of These Days, Careful with that Axe Eugene, Great Gig in the Sky, Any Colour You Like, etc.).

Any of Yoko Kanno's music. Seriously, this is the one you need to go after.
