How often do you play without a pick. Sometimes i practice soloing with just my thumb, just cause its fun, but it also slows me down quite a bit because I can't upstroke with it.

Well if i'm playing piano i generally tend not to use a pick :P and on guitar i prefer fingerpicking, it feels more natural to me, perhaps i should practice with a pick more?

Mainly fingers in general. I play alot of acoustic guitar with my fingers, grown my nails especially so. I study jazz as well and i've found the fingers are a lot better for comping, but the pick will always come first for the solo's, i'm no Mark Knophler

Sultans of Swing I don't play with a pick

I don't play mellow stuff with a pick sometimes, but anything harder rock I have to. I play Moonlight Sonata a lot, and you have to fingerpick it. I use the fingernail on my pointer finger to alternate pick. It works!

I almost never use a pick, I got too lazy to find one so I just started growing my nails out. I do use a pleck every now and then though....wow, those statistics are surprising, I figured most people played with a pick 100% of the time. I'm the only guy I know that uses his fingers at all...

Yeah man, grow the nails, sounds so much better. I'm constantly answering to chicks at the pub why i have long nails but once you explain to them your a musician, they usually change their tune and buy you a drink or two.

About 50/50. I like to keep my options open, especially because ive considered getting an acoustic, or maybe learning bass.

the poll needs more options. I play mostly with a pick, but about 35% of the time without.
