Say I'm playing a riff from a song where the riff doesn't incorporate legato techniques like hammer-ons, pull offs, etc but I play the riff with hammer-ons and pull-offs anyways. Does that necessarily mean the riff is being played incorrectly; I just find it sounds more fluid, which it's supposed to, but I want some advice.

Depends, if you're doing it to change the feel of the riff then fair enough, however if you're doing it because you can't pick it accurately enough then you're just kidding yourself. You can't hide from practicing forever, either learn to play stuff properly or don't play it at all.

a lot of blues/rock licks that are written to be picked sound better (imo) with legato. I just like that fluid sound as well.
