how are you supposed to play a major 13 chord? it has 7 different notes in it..

On guitar you often have to compromise notes because you only have 6 strings, and can only play things within the limit of your fingers. The trick is to hit the 'key' notes. Root and Fifth can often be ignored (especially if the bassist plays the root, usually the case)

Whoever wants too. Haha. I just posted it because I was bored.

you could tap the note after the chord is played. My friend has this awsome tapping lick that's just a chord and then tapped slides.

i'd also like to point out some guitars have 7 strings........

Jazz is a wonderful thing my friend.

Also, to Threadstarter, why not submit this as a lesson or possibly a tab? This thread will die and be lost in the mounds upon mounds upon even bigger mounds of other threads.

Since the 9 and #11 in a maj13 chord are in parenthesis they can often be ignored.

9th chords

6/9 - R 3 5 6 7 this 7 should be a 9

13th chords
maj13 - R 3 5 7 (9) (#11) 13 the 11th is not sharp, should be R 3 5 7 11 13
13 - R 3 5 b7 (9) (#11) 13 as above, 11th should be natural
13b9 - R 3 5 b7 b9 (#11) 13 yep, same again
13#9 - R 3 5 b7 #9 (#11) 13 i think you're getting the idea

this is a really useful post, it will be a good reference point for learners
i just corrected a couple of errors in case anybody uses this post for future reference, perhaps edit the original with these if you agree???

i think you knew the 6/9 chord error, but the other mistake is with the 13 chords, you dont sharp the 11th in those chords, it just remains natural, unless the chord you are playing is a _13#11 etc

hope this helps, once again, good post.
