So today I read an article claiming that the polar ice caps could be melted completely by the year 2012. I was talking to my friends about it today, and they told me that they believe that mankind doesn't play a roll in global warming; that it's all blown out of proportion. They claim that it's all natural. They also said that Al Gore should go die somewhere I like Al Gore. I'm not saying that I think we're all to blame, but I think we have a lot to do with it. So I was wondering, what does the Pit think? Is global warming a man-made problem, or is it just nature being natural?

EDIT: I hope there's not another one of these threads

Mankind doesn't have anything to do with Global Warming, The polar ice caps on Mars are also melting and so are the moons of Jupiter. The Humans causing Global Warming bull**** is just to make money. Don't buy into their fear campaign, it's all lies.

we have made an impact. there's no doubting that, but it is a natural process. It's been happening since the earth was formed and will keep happening. Global warming has been responsible for many mass extinctions in history before humans. Although we've affected it we're probably destined to be the next global warming-caused mass extinction. we should stop wasting time trying to reverse everything we've done and actually predict accurately what this global warming is gonna do to our planet so we can prepare

Global warming IS a natural occurence, however, humans are intensifying it by the millionth power (complete exaggeration of course).

Man made or not, don't mess up our planet!

We should make an effort not to pollute and to save energy. Even if it doesn't cause global warming, that doesn't mean we're allowed to pollute our own home.

I could see how it could be a mix of natural and man-made causes. But, I'm wondering, if it is natural causes, why is this happening now?

i heard that methane from cow **** causes more global warming than any thing else. dunno though.

also, as for why is it happening now? its probably been happening for thousands of years. but no one has ever had the technology to say '' global warming is killing our planet''

Don't get me wrong, I think it is a mixture of both, and I'm not blaming it on the human race at all. I just think that there's basically two schools of thought in politics right now: Either it doesn't exist, or it is all our fault and recycling and hybrids are the only way to stop it.

it's true and people are trying to take the bacteria from kangaroos' bellies and implant them into a cow's belly to reduce the methane content of the gas

To be honest it's a mixture of man kind and nature just taking a natural toll. Just because we have technology that proves the world is changing, we feel we need to change it, even though half of it is due to natural causes.

I would go into more detail but I have stuff to do =/

the Earth naturally gets into weird orbits (which we are heading towards in the distant future)
and we are kind of polluting a lot (the more immediate problem)

I think it's a natural progress and it's blown out of proportions. I like that we're doing things for the environment, but don't make up bullshit facts.

Of course, man has made an impact on the environment but if it's that big that al snore claims it is? I'd like to see some unbiased evidence.

that's a myth. However, it is true that the number one emittor of Carbon Dioxide gas is not automobiles, nor factories, but the curing process of Cement.

Well it's not the single leading cause, but I'm just saying nature has an enormous impact, especially volcanoes. There was a vast impact on the environment when vesuvius erupted, I remember. I think the global temperature rose as well, but don't quote me on that.

a lot of it is natural, i mean as the population of the earth increases, no matter how little energy or greenhouse gases etc we use or don't use, the temperature will increase. thats not to say that we can just continue what we are doing, we do need to cut back. but i think a lot of global warming is blown entirely out of proportion.

Methane and CO2 are problematic, I've always been told. And cows create an astronomical amount of methane everyday. And we all produce CO2 whenever we breathe.

There is no global warming. Period.

You can't find a real scientist anywhere in the world who can look you in the eye and, without hesitation, without clarification, without saying, kinda, mighta, sorta, if, and or but...say "yes, global warming is with us."

There is no evidence whatsoever to support such claims. Anyone who tells you that scientific research shows warming trends - be they teachers, news casters, Congressmen, Senators, Vice Presidents or Presidents - is wrong. There is no global warming.

Scientific research through U.S. Government satellite and balloon measurements shows that the temperature is actually cooling - very slightly - .037 degrees Celsius.

A little research into modern-day temperature trends bears this out. For example, in 1936 the Midwest of the United States experienced 49 consecutive days of temperatures over 90 degrees. There were another 49 consecutive days in 1955. But in 1992 there was only one day over 90 degrees and in 1997 only 5 days.

Because of modern science and improved equipment, this "cooling" trend has been most accurately documented over the past 18 years. Ironically, that's the same period of time the hysteria has grown over dire warnings of "warming."

I will only say this once:
"Global warming doesn't exist, it's just a lie made up by mcDonalds so they can make greenpeace happymeals and make a huge profit. By the way: Al gore was a Manager at mcDonalds, untill he found out mcDonald's evil masterplan and was ordered to make a movie. Other Managers that found out either got killed, or were brainwashed to become comedians, like Andy Milonakis."
So there.

I don't buy into the whole global warming thing. Some of these people pushing global warming are the same ones who claimed in the 70s that the global cooling was a dire threat and we would be frozen under ice in 50 years. I think warming and cooling trends are natural, I mean my God 10,000 years ago the polar Ice Caps were in the American Deep South, north Georgia had Borreal (spell?) forests of Spruce, Firs etc, alot like the forests of Canada now so they have been retreating for awhile

I'm inclined to say natural but can see how mankind could have an effect. Either way, who cares? The earth changes constantly, whether influenced by us or not. So the ice caps will go, so what? Things change
If all these people whining about global warming instead thought about what actual effect on us it will have and concerned their time more with thinking how to adapt to how the world changes rather than desperately trying to hold back the power of the entire globe we'd live in a much happier world.

The only possible threats global warming holds are against our current culture. Many civilisations have and do live in very different climates. They adapt.

Short version- Carbon Dioxide absorbs radiation (UV I believe) and then re-emits this as infra-red radiation. IR is abosrbed by other things and heats up.

We are putting more CO2 into the atmosphere. How could that not heat up the planet?

In the generally self regulated planet, trees would use this excess CO2 during photosynthesis (Is that the one? I didn't do plant biology) and grow faster thus using up this excess CO2, and as such is self regulating (at least to a degree). But with deforestation this regulating mechanism can't work as effectively as it could.

As CO2 increases, it throws out the equilibrium with the earths oceans bicarbonate ions. As a result, the ocean starts to release more CO2 into the atmosphere. If more CO2 is still being put into the atmosphere by people, then the seas will have to release more CO2 to compensate. Take that ocean pH and anything than requires calcium carbonate!

On cows and methane. Do you really think cows would be so widespread if it wasn't for people? Less cows=less methane. Unfortunately (not a veggie btw) more people=more food=more cows.

Incidentally water is a greenhouse gas as well. And there is more of it in the atmosphere than CO2. But the volume of water on earth is prety much constant. So as we put more water into the atmosphere, it rains more. So thats not a problem, it's self regulating. I've not seen Al Gores' film, nor have I studied meterology/geography, but presumably this extra dampness in the air is where the link to hurricanes/violent weather comes in.

Of course, I am willing to admit that there is evidence to suggest that it's a natural cycle of the sun. However, regardless of weither or not we are the main cause of global warming, the increased CO2 in the atmosphere is a problem, becuase it WILL increase the temperature, as well as screw with ecosystems. Not only that, but we will use our fossil fuel reserves (not anytime soon, especially with more effiecient extraction/refinement techniques, as well as more being discovered all the time). But we will eventually. Nuclear FTW!
