I use Cakewalk to record and I have a regular stage mic. When I record it's clear but it skips a lot. Is this the microphone or the program? And when I try to go directly from the amp to the computer it's **** quality and quiet. Can anyone tell me which type of microphone to use?

yep get either an interface or a DI box and preamp.
An interface would be best as you can use it with mics and instruments.

Cakewalk is good but you probably have a slower computer or incompatible audio card causing latency and skipping.
