ok, i love this song, i think its fantastic, but unusually (because i normally know what the songs i like are about) i cant work out what its actually about. so could anyone help me here? i have some ideas, but none of it seems connected, and the only level that i can like it on currently is sonically, rather than semantically, so im only really getting half of the song.

here are the lyrics for anyone who wants a blast at guessing.

i heard there was a secret chord
that david played and it pleased the lord
but you don't really care for music, do you
well it goes like this the fourth, the fifth
the minor fall and the major lift
the baffled king composing hallelujah

hallelujah...

well your faith was strong but you needed proof
you saw her bathing on the roof
her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
she tied you to her kitchen chair
she broke your throne and she cut your hair
and from your lips she drew the hallelujah

hallelujah...

baby i've been here before
i've seen this room and i've walked this floor
i used to live alone before i knew you
i've seen your flag on the marble arch
but love is not a victory march
it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

hallelujah...

well there was a time when you let me know
what's really going on below
but now you never show that to me do you
but remember when i moved in you
and the holy dove was moving too
and every breath we drew was hallelujah

well, maybe there's a god above
but all i've ever learned from love
was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
it's not a cry that you hear at night
it's not somebody who's seen the light
it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

hallelujah...

ps. i have a feeling that it is about how religion doesn't really help anything, but that doesn't seem to be consistent in the song.

isn't it just about how love isn't all its cracked up to be. the whole "every rose has a thorn" thing

That's the beauty of good lyrics. They sound good and philosophical but really don't mean anything.
Joking aside, I don't think they really have anything to do with religion, it's definitely some kind of love song.
If you could blow up the world with a flick of a switch,
Would you do it?

If you could make everybody poor just so you could be rich,
Would you do it?

With all your power,
What would you do?

It's the story of David and Bathsheba from the Bible.

I've always wondered if that song is the reason why so many Christian rock bands abuse Gsus4 chords.

But seriously, the song isn't about one specific thing. It's a dude trying to sound philosophical, and succeeding. Broken into pieces, it could be about the healing power of music, failed relationships, or losing faith in God. But there's not one specific theme. Beautiful lyrics though.

Well the one verse is obviously about that, but Im not sure about the rest. Im a huge Leonard Cohen fan, and we sang this song in choir this year, but its hard to say. They are just incredible lyrics and no one knows why. I heard an interview with Cohen one time and this man is truly incredible. Hes so interesting, Id like to read a bio on him one day.

justin, that was easily the most inspiring, helpful piece of advice anyone has ever given me in regards to my musical pursuits.

There's actually several verses that were never used in the original or the more popular Buckley version that have nothing to do with the ones that got released, so I think that definitely doesn't point to a single theme.
