Hey I'm looking to add to my rig. What I want right now is a fuzz pedal, a really dece one at that. I'm looking for that really classic David Gilmour, Cream sort of tone.

Tone wise, I want something similar to this at 5:32:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=hy_n4pzWbvc

Obviously, I can't get Gilmour's tone exactly, no one can, but I'd like something along those lines. I know he uses a fuzz face with silicon transistors in that vid, so that's something I'd like. I'd also like to spend under 150USD if possible.

Rig wise, I'm playing a Schecter semi hollowbody right now through a Vox AC15.

Roger Mayer Classic Fuzz.

The Classic is the closest thing to a germanium face. It'll do that perfectly.

He has a silicon Muff, but I believe Pompeii's a germanium Face.

EDIT: It was '72, so it's probably a silicon fuzz. Look into a vintage Sovtek Muff, or the Roger Mayer Axis Fuzz. My axis can nail that tone fairly easy.

Pompeii is a silicon Fuzz Face. If you want very early Floyd, I believe Gilmour used a germanium fuzz face, but I believe he started using a silicon Fuzz Face sometime around 1970ish. A silicon fuzz would probably be the way to go if you want Pompeii/Dark Side sounds. If you're looking for later Floyd/Gilmour (from Animals on) then a vintage Big Muff would be the way to go (I don't like the new ones at all). Those big green Sovtek Muffs from the '90s are real nice

Yeah, its the 70-73ish fuzz face sound I'm looking for.

I'm pretty sure the big muff isn't quite what I'm looking for.

That Roger Mayer one is a bit out of my price range unfortunately. I'd like something between $100-150.

Theres a couple of real good options you have for that tone:

Analogman Sunface (BC 109 edition)
Fulltone 70
Roger Mayer Axis Fuzz
Hartman Silicon Fuzz

The hartman is exactly $150, the sunface is $200+, not sure on the axis, and the fulltone 70 is $170.
Fender MIM Stratocaster
Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamer
Fulltone OCD
Dallas-Arbiter Wah Baby
Home-Built Germanium Fuzz Face
MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay
2 Fender Blues Juniors

BYOC Fuzz Face Clone - $80 for the kit and around $120is for it preassembled.

Tweakable too based on the components you use.

^ I'm also thinking about getting a BYOC, either Fuzz Face or Tonebender depending on whether I go with germanium or silicon.

I tried the Fulltone 70 and it was quite good.

^ Yeah it comes with sockets so it makes swapping a breeze. Just rebias and rock out. There's a bunch of mods you can do too, depending on the sound you want. There's a sweet diagram at Beavis Audio that shows all the popular mods and upgrades for the circuit. I'm planning on rehousing mine and doing almost all of them.

Although, I think the kit now comes with Germanium trannies only so you'll have to just get a pair of BC108s from mouser or somewhere.

^^ Nice, if you can manage that, it would be a pretty versatile fuzz then.

I think the Fuzz Face would be the way to go, oh well gotta wait till I can afford one first.

^ I see, the tonebender I think only comes with germaniums as well.

^ Yeah but the Tonebender never used Silicons anyway. BYOC's getting cheap on us lol.

Yeah the rehouse will prolly cost me 50 bucks but I think it'll be worth it.

before, it was PNP Positive ground with AC128s... before, it gave so many more mod options. now they're overpricing it (at $80) and giving less stuff.

Well actually I think the kits (ult fuzz) always came with AC127's at least recently.

And when you go through it, sourcing everything yourself (back when BYOC sold PCB's) would cost about $60ish or more so it's not a bad deal really.

Futurlec is foreign and is hell to deal with as far as shipping time and service goes. PPP and fx connection are good though. But then again shipping still hurts

^PPP's shipping is $1.5 if you don't order heavy stuff (enclosure). but still, it's like $4.60.

Futurlec's shipping is $4 if ur under $30, and it takes a dAMN big shopping cart to get $30 worth of ****.

How easy or hard do you think it would be to get those BYOC parts separately from those sites? Instead of ordering a kit.
Is this stuff available at radioshack too?

Edit: Looks like the enclosures would need drilling, I guess the kit is a better idea then.

not radioshack. maybe some other electronic geek store, but online from my sites are by far the cheapest and the most stuff.

just ac128s, use ebay or buy from somebody around this forum. kurtlives91 has a lot so he can sell u some.

PPP has drilled enclosures.

Futurlec is american based. has headquarter in america i think. at least an office. the warehouse is in thailand. thats it. sometimes they're kinda slow tho.

^ yeah ive heard some bad things about futurlec but they might not be too bad. And PPP is great for all enclosure stuff: powdercoating, custom drilling and their prices are very good.

EDIT: if you go with ppp you can buy a 125b drilled for three knobs just like the kit enclosure 'cept you'll have to use a bezel which is no biggie.

^u get ur own pots (pot shafts are same size) and an LED bezel with some offboard wiring. BYOC is THE option if this is ur first build tho. i doubt a first timer is capable of doing off-board wiring.

ur biggest obstacle (like in my first build) should be wiring the 3PDT.

^ Okay, i'll go with BYOC right now. Looked through the instructions and it seems manageable for a first time. Just got to start practicing with the soldering iron, I haven't used one in years and that was to connect some open wires. The online tutorials have been helpful though.

Thanks Shot and Floydian been a lot of help.
Feel kind of bad for hijacking the thread though, if it helps i'm looking to get those sort of Gimour sounds as well from a fuzz.
