Hey all,

Im normally an electric guy but i've decided to go acoustic for this coffee house at my CHURCH (that means songs on the cleaner side, i can do a bit of editing though). Im looking for stuff that can do 2 things:
1)Any song a girl would love
2)But also acceptable by the male population

This means no hey there delilah or any other such song. Im looking at 3-4 songs. Please give me some suggestions. So far I have: Yellow, Cannonball, Follow you into the dark, and Under the Bridge. Any others?

If stairway to heaven is banned, then I don't see how you're going to get away with "Under the Bridge", which is about where he bought drugs during a heroin addiction.

Personally I think that "follow you into the dark" is a rather screwed up choice for church as well. In the lyrics he basically says that he will follow his girlfriend into death and rejects the idea that they are going to heaven, basically admits that he was totally turned off by the idea in Catholic school, etc. VERY BAD CHOICE, ASKING FOR TROUBLE IF SOMEBODY ACTUALLY PAYS ATTENTION.

By "Cannonball", do you mean the one by the Breeders that mentions "blown to hell" and a bong??? Surely not.

Yellow is better, but still, "your skin Oh yeah your skin and bones , Turn into something beautiful, you know for you I'd bleed myself dry, For you I'd bleed myself dry"... kinda creepy for church.

Not trying to sound like a goody-goody, I mean I listen to lots crazier things, but, I play guitar at church, and I can guarantee you that there will be goody-goodies there picking apart everything. Singing about heroin, purposely not going to heaven, bleeding to death for a girl, and bongs aren't exactly good church material. There are people there who will complain if you sing Amazing Grace the wrong way without explaining why first, so you better believe they're going to freak out over some of these lyrics. So, don't listen to some of these other suggestions either. Metallica and Green Day doesn't need to be in church.

Well anyway, some suggestions off the top of my head... the best thing to do would be to stick to things by Chris Tomlin and such, but if you're adamant about not playing a Christian song...

Streets of London

various John Denver songs... like Country Road

various Creed songs (kinda sorta not really sound Christian)

various old Hootie and the Blowfish... Time, hold my hand, etc.

something funny, like "I am a man of constant sorrow" from the "o brother where art thou" soundtrack. Bonus points on this one for being kinda sorta religious ("I'll meet you on God's golden shore")

It's not necessarily the song choice itself that will make you or break you anyway. A good acoustic solo player can take a piece of crap song and play it in a way that everybody will like. So, I say go for songs with very tame lyrics then dress it up in such a manner that everybody will like. Don't pick something because of the way the radio version sounds and how everybody else views that version. You're going to be stripped down to a single acoustic and a voice, so it's not going to sound the same anyway.

Learn some instrumental songs. No one can complain about lyrics if they're aren't any. It's not like they are going to tell you Aminor is the devil.

Hehehe... do some Lamb of God, they'll think it's all nice and christ-y. Just bring an electric-acoustic and your amp with everything you need to get lots of gain, but keep it on the down low and spring it on 'em when they least expect it.
