get a cheap marshall... my MG15DFX has a button that simulates the sound of one of the expensive tube marshall amps.

my lightsnake was like 30 dollars...I plug it into a toneworks pandora and then run an SM-57 in front of my cab. For this I'm using the pandora to set the volume and nothing more...it works great. But the lightsnake can run straight into a pedaltrain/ effects loop/ guitar

The M- Audio fast track is only around 40-50 I think. I would go with that over the lightsnake.

I'm sure you could find one of these used without all the extra stuff it comes with in that price range http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/EMu-0404-USB-2.0-Recording-Interface?sku=242516

If you get it new it comes with everything you need.

I would say the Toneport GX has got to be one of the better units out for the price range but as always, if you have teh money to spend, its almost always better to go with a higher end model and that E-MU 0404 has just about anything a home studio should need (minus a ton of inputs for drum micing...)
