It adds an additional 20dB boost to your gain, so when you want to kick into a solo, you turn it on. It's part of the Kerry King EMG set, and it's also featured on Dan Jacob's (that guy from Atreyu) custom guitar.

If you had room in your control cavity for four batteries you could do it. As the 18v volt mod requires two batteries wired in series, and the double battery life requires two batteries wired in parallel. So a mixture of those two. I'm sure someone else could give a wiring schematic, as I'm no good with them.
