Yes, I know how to palm mute must have been asked before, but, I can't get it quite right. When I put my finger lightly on the first fret (In drop D) i get the sound I want, but I cant get it on other frets. The sound I'm looking for is a palm muted sound that rings.

Are you sure you know how to palm mute? That doesn't sound anything like palm muting.

Put the palm of your picking hand on the strings near the bridge.

putting your finger lightly over a fret is a way to get a type of harmonic, you rest your picking hand lightly on the strings right next to the bridge in order to palm mute.

If you want one that rings, what I do is palm mute it, and then let go of it.

It works.

Not sure if it answered your question though...
