Title says it all.

Just let us know who your favourite lyricist (or poet) is; the artist who writes what is to you amazing words, lyrics, and poetry. They can be an artist of any genre, so feel free to list more than one.
It would be appreciated if you were to give reasons as to why you like this lyricist, post examples of their works (songs.etc.), or even links to videos or webpages with some of their works.

Personally, being a metalhead i love Matt Heafy's (Trivium) lyrics in the band's earlier works. Every word is (IMO) incredibly intellectual and they all intertwine so well together. Here's an example from one of their demo songs, Fugue:

As I stand at the edge of existence
Nameless shores of infinity
Perpetual unbirth unraveling distance
Clandestine truths unveiled

Imperfections preprogrammed shells
Spawning from the malestrom
Mechanical drones feeding from thy mother
God machine reproduce

Feel free to name your's, and please no flaming, i made this thread for other lyricists like myself so that ideas, opinions, and pieces or works can be shared.

Some of Emily Bronte's poems, Edgar Allen Poe, not quite Ville. But he's still awesome.

Editedit: And Jim Morrison, oh and whoever wrote the lyrics for God Send Death, was it King? I can't remember

So corny but so excellent

Trash era Alice Cooper that'd be though.

Dan Greening (also known as Lord Worm), hes a great death metal poet and he really knows how to use the english language!
Sextons of the churchyard
Have seen unblessed things;
Ground no longer hallowed
Has sprouted new graves.

Descendants of clan
That unsurped maternity
hear whispers in their blood;
This summons of the Fathers.

Adherence to the principle
Of "man by woman born"...
Anachronistic ritual
Soon to be obsolete.

ville valo- he always manged to talk about his feeling with such an intensity that you could feel his anguish and sorrow.

claudio sanchez- he managed to intertwine a story into randomly sorted lyrics that often meant to the casual listener completely nothing yet to the hardcore fan listening to a mere song could spring all sorts of amazing feelings and interpretations of the story.

I'm really not a country person, but I always thought Jonny Cash managed to tell a great story in his lyrics.

Also Jim Morrison. I love his symbolism and love stories.

Betty won’t stop listening to modern rock
How she hates to be alone
I try to compensate her lack of love with coffee cake
Ice cream and a bottle of ten dollar wine she says hey
I rock the Haro sport
I rock the cow girl blues
I rock too fast for love I’m footloose in my Velcro shoes

I have opened my eyes to see the world the surrounds me daily
I refuse to be led by the majority
Can't compromise I and I
To pass judgment
Judgment will be passed upon you
I will stand up for who I am
Never moved by condemnation
No one is placed higher than another
No matter race or creed or gender
We must teach forgiveness and compassion for all life
Through understanding of our differences
We will find respect for one another
We are all flesh and blood
I am not afraid to speak my mind
No matter the consequences
Stay true to yourself
Through the humble eyes of a child we will realize true equality
They can not take me from me

You must have been phlegmatic in stature
The gates of thanos are a spread eagle wide
You let the shutters make sackcloth and ashes
Out of a blind mans picaresque heart

You take the veil
You'll take the dive
You take the veil

It's not over till the tremulant sings
These ides of march
Are they so make believe
How tempts the revenant
Slice up and not across

You take the veil
You'll take the dive
You take the veil

A mass of gallon sloth
As flys have walls for feet
A rapturous verbatim-someone said but who is to know
And when you find the fringe
The one last hit that spent you
You'll find the ossuary spilling by the day

The iconoclastic had it coming for years
They know the prisons that you have yet to fear
Where thumbs hide inside of sleepingbag mouths
Adlib your memoires by casting a drought
Oh dear god, I dont feel alive.

Bob Dylan or Joe Strummer

Quote by Bob Dylan - Hurricane
Rubin Carter was falsely tried.
The crime was murder one, guess who testified?
Bello and Bradley and they both baldly lied,
and the newspapers, they all went along for the ride.
How can the life of such a man,
be in the palm of some fool's hand?
To see him obviously framed,
couldn't help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land,
where justice is a game.

Quote by The Clash - Straight to Hell
When it's Christmas out in Ho Chi Minh City,
kiddie say papa papa papa papa papa-san take me home.
See me got photo photo -
photograph of you and Mamma Mamma Mamma-san,
Of you and Mamma Mamma Mamma-san.
Lemme tell ya 'bout your blood bamboo kid,
it ain't Coca-Cola it's rice.

Are you such a dreamer?
To put the world to rights?
I'll stay home forever
Where two & two always
makes up five

I'll lay down the tracks
Sandbag & hide
January has April's showers
And two & two always
makes up five

It's the devil's way now
There is no way out
You can scream & you
can shout
It is too late now
Because

You have not been
paying attention

I try to sing along
I get it all wrong
Ezeepeezeeeezeepeeezee
NOT
I swat em like flies but
Like flies the b*ggers
Keep coming back
NOT
Maybe not
"All hail to the thief"
"But I am not!"
"Don't question my authority
or put me in the dock"
Cozimnot!
Go & tell the king that
The sky is falling in
When it's not
Maybe not.

(ahh diddums.)

On paper it looks ****, but really works as a song

Bob Dylan - Shelter from the Storm

I've heard newborn babies wailin' like a mournin' dove
And old men with broken teeth stranded without love.
Do I understand your question, man, is it hopeless and forlorn?
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

In a little hilltop village, they gambled for my clothes
I bargained for salvation an' they gave me a lethal dose.
I offered up my innocence and got repaid with scorn.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

Well, I'm livin' in a foreign country but I'm bound to cross the line
Beauty walks a razor's edge, someday I'll make it mine.
If I could only turn back the clock to when God and her were born.
"Come in," she said,
"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

Just an excerpt, couldn't chose a best verse, but I guess that last one's my favourite.

I like Bob Marley, too.

I ****ing love Arif (PTH) and Tommy Rogers (BTBAM) as lyricists. Their songs are so good, and intellectual...blah blah. Seriously though, check out fortress, and anything by BTBAM. You'll be amazed.

Dani Filth:

"The Moon, she hangs like a cruel portrait
soft winds whisper the bidding of trees
as this tragedy starts with a shattered glass heart
and the Midnightmare trampling of dreams
But on, no tears please
Fear and pain may accompany Death
But it is desire that shepherds it's certainty
as We shall see..."

She was divinity's creature
That kissed in cold mirrors
A Queen of Snow
Far beyond compare
Lips attuned to symmetry
Sought Her everywhere
Dark liqoured eyes
An Arabian nightmare...

She shone on watercolours
Of my pondlife as pearl
Until those who couldn't have Her
Cut Her free of this World

That fateful Eve when...
The trees stank of sunset and camphor
Their lanterns chased phantoms and threw
An imquisitive glance, like the shadows they cast
On my love picking rue by the light of the moon

Putting reason to flight
Or to death as their way
They crept through woods mesmerized
By the taffeta Ley
Of Her hips that held sway
Over all they surveyed
Save a mist on the rise
(A deadly blessing to hide)
Her ghost in the fog

They raped left...
(Five men of God)
...Her ghost in the fog

Dawn discovered Her there
Beneath the Cedar's stare
Silk dress torn, Her raven hair
Flown to gown Her beauty bared
Was starred with frost, I knew Her lost
I wept 'til tears crept back to prayer

She'd sworn Me vows in fragrant blood
"Never to part
Lest jealous Heaven stole our hearts"

Then this I screamed:
"Come back to Me
I was born in love with thee
So why should fate stand inbetween?"

And as I drowned Her gentle curves
With dreams unsaid and final words
I espied a gleam trodden to earth
The Church bell tower key...

The village mourned her by the by
For She'd been a witch
their Men had longed to try
And I broke under Christ seeking guilty signs
My tortured soul on ice

A Queen of snow
Far beyond compare
Lips attuned to symmetry
Sought Her everywhere
Trappistine eyes
An Arabian nightmare...

She was Ersulie possessed
Of a milky white skin
My porcelain Yin
A graceful Angel of Sin

And so for Her...
The breeze stank of sunset and camphor
My lantern chased Her phantom and blew
Their Chapel ablaze and all locked in to a pain
Best reserved for judgement that their bible construed...

Putting reason to flight
Or to flame unashamed
I swept form cries
Mesmerized
By the taffeta Ley
Or Her hips that held sway
Over all those at bay
Save a mist on the rise
A final blessing to hide
Her ghost in the fog

And I embraced
Where lovers rot...
Her ghost in the fog

Her ghost in the fog
