So i just got this e-mail from the school saying that they were suspending my internet access because i did something that was in violation of school policy. I now must attend this meeting with the schools judiciary committee. I'm freaking out because I'm thinking of the worst possible scenario which would be suspension, or expulsion from school or legal action. I'm thinking it's because I had limewire installed on my comp, but i never downloaded anything at school, because I knew that i was on their network and they can see everything i do on there. Am i worried for nothing or is this legit, anybody else in college have this happen?

Tell them to prove it. And say you use limewire to transfer files from back home to school if you need them like papers etc.
#3
It depends on the rules of your school what's gonna happen to you. Didn't they give you something that tells you the rules regarding internet usage? My friend got a notification and he just had to delete the file.

Yes i got a copy of the rules, and obviously illegally downloading music is against the rules. And they could very easily prove it since i am on their network they know every single thing i have ever done on my comp while connected to the network.

+1 i would go with that. call your mum and tell her to send you some papers via limewire to show as "evidence".

Best of luck to you man. I really do mean that.

Well they should tell you the specific consequences for each of your actions, and what you can do to prove your innocence. I say delete every trace of Limewire and any files you've downloaded from it.

I've never knew that could happen, that sucks. Well, like someone else already said, ask them to show proof of you having files downloaded. They can check your computer and find out if you downloaded anything while you where in their network and since you didn't they have nothing on you. But I don't get it, even though is their network, why does it even matter to them if you download music, I mean how is that their problem, is not on their computer. Good luck to you with that.
#10
couldnt they use this thread as evidence that you did it?

at our school a couple people got bashed by the music industry goons so we arent even allowed to have downloading software on our computer. every time i go home i reinstall limewire. its not worth the crazy lawsuits theyll drop on you. that said, i think the music industry guys would have contacted you directly if you were in deep ****, so you may just get off with a slap on the wrist.
#11
have you been sharing music? I mean, have other people downloaded off of your computer, even if you haven't downloaded anything yourself?

Get rid of limewire, figure out what you did wrong, tell them you didn't understand, and it probably won't amount to more than a warning.

What i don't get is why me, there's tens of thousands of students at ASU, i'm pretty sure i'm not the only one who has downloaded music. Which also worries me because they might be after me for something else, maybe porn or something, but again it's college i'm sure i'm not the only one

University of Washington has it's own peer to peer music downloading server .

That's pretty lame though. G'luck on nothing big happening.

If you had limewire but never used it in school, would it still show up in their activity logs? I mean they can't just search his harddrive for programs, I would think the program would have to have some internet activity...

If you have a roommate, he might have downloaded it, and that's why they're cutting your internet access.

At my school, if you pirate music or software, you get an email from the RIAA telling you that you did it (they upload stuff and see what schools download them, and then contact those schools to get your info), and they give you various options. You can either delete all of the stuff you downloaded and be fine (sometimes paying for everything you downloaded), and possibly face some sort of consequences from the school, or you can take on the RIAA and go to court.

But if your school didn't even mention illegal downloading, you could be freaking out for the wrong reason. I mean, maybe they caught the child porn you downloaded, and you're just under-freaking out.

if you had limewire installed on your comp, but used it for zero downloads, then you haven't done anything wrong (unless merely having such software is against your school's policy). could it possibly be something else? porn? using up too much bandwidth owing to videochatting or playing games or whathaveyou? unless having limewire on your computer is against the rules, i can't see where you've done anything wrong. don't jump to conclusions and, when you go to the committee meeting, don't jump the gun. let them tell you how you've violated the rules, and go from there. otherwise you might give them more ammo.

and just a little addition: i got many letters last year from the office of residence life at my school because i violated the rules of no overnight guests of the opposite sex. i wrote a couple of good e-mails and got out of it all . good luck!

i was in the office when they were talking about what they're bringing you in for.. appearently they screen captured this image
