I got an used valveking last week and it was sounding pretty good but it has stock tubes and I don't know how old they are and today I just couldn't get that good of a sound out of it. So I was wondering if it would most likely be the pre amp or power amp tubes and what would I have to do to replace them and what are some good suggestions for some tubes that are good for metal. I'm thinking it's the pre amp tubes but I'm not sure I also heard that this amp is auto re biasing but I'm not sure if it's true or not. The tubes are 12AX7 preamp and 6L6GC power amp tubes.

I agree. I put the JJ 6L6GC and Tung Sol 12AX7's in my valveking and it was a nice improvement. Do it!

ok I took off the preamp tube covers and they have been replaced with electro harmonix tubes 7 months ago and I looked them up and it said they were made for high gain stuff which is just what I need but I'm still gong to replace the power amp tubes. I read it was auto biasing so if I put any 6l6gc tubes in I won't have to have it biased? I just want to be sure. and these look like nice tubes but I'm not sure

Electro Harmonix are high gain but are not the highest sound quality. The ones I had were microphonic so I switched to Tungsol and they were really quier and still high gain.

yes i read them and I have been looking into the JJ 6L6GC tubes I don't think I'm going to switch out the elcetro harmonix ones or at least for now, because I owe my parents money until my guitars sell then I won't have that much left to be buying a lot.

I think I'll go with the JJ 6L6GCs and later on get the tungsol 12ax7s

Oh, well that makes buying tubes alot more expensive.

Anyways I would personally get the preamp tubes first. Just one of my things where I would rather have a quiet amp than an amp with noisy preamp tubes and a minimal change in the poweramp.

Before you do anything get to know the amp. Unless you have a lot of experience (which you may have) one week is too soon to decide to change tubes based on sound.

I would aggree.

In my opinion, Valvekings need speaker swaps, then preamp tubes, then power tubes. In that order.

Eventually that's my plan and maybe a better reverb tank, I'm going to get some veteran 30s for it and new tubes when I get a job and start having more money I'll be able to get it all done instead of just the power tubes I think the preamp ones are ok I will switch them out later on though.

Well if your tone is lacking, it is most likely the preamp tubes if it is the tubes at all. So you can't really make a statement like you think they are ok when you aren't satisfied with your tone.
