I have been playing for about three years now, with just a basic rig ( Wah pedal and Line 6 Spider II)

But now I have to expand for live sets, and I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to setting up a rig.

My two favorite guitarists are Dimebag and Alexi Laiho, so if anyone can give me some tips on getting a sound like one of those two; or at least something close to it, that would be awesome.

First off, if you're gonna play live, GETTT a new amp. Tone is important, a spiders tone will be a turn off, but get that and either multi-effects (line 6 pod is great) or single pedals. Start with adding a OD pedal to ur collection.

I'll be playing Thrash/Heavy Metal Mostly, but i'm still looking for a strong sound.

My Budget is like 1200 bucks, around there

I'd just like to get a recommendation for which amps/ pedals/pre-amp(wouldn't know how to use it) and everything else.

basically a simple but strong sound.

For a metal amp you could get a used mesa F-50, which should be fine with the wah, and maybe a boost pedal, but the F-50 has a contour/boost button. I think the amp is what you should focus on. Other amps:
-Any other mesa
-Randall amps
-Peavey
-Marshall Vintage/Modern

How concerned are you with cleans? That would probably affect the answer we give, but as a rule of thumb, a nice 30+ watt 2x12 combo would probably be more than enough for gigging, especially with a PA system. Then, a good tubescreamer/OD pedal should work for a lead boost/sound tightener.

cleans aren't very important to me, I've got an EMG 81-85 set so its not like i was aiming for good clean in the first place.

If I get a marshall half stack, what effects and stuff should i get?
#12
If you plan on getting a Marshall *cough*tube*cough* half-stack, stick with an OD, maybe a wah, and then I suppose whatever other effects you want for your music. No need to overcomplicate things if you don't see yourself using effects often while you're playing.

You should get a used 6505, and a new guitar. The m-50 isn't the best thing out there. I would suggest selling it and getting a used m-400, already comes with emg 81/85
