So my computer just crashed, and it now won't start. (this is my sister's computer btw). It loads up, then I get the message

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
\windows\system32\config\system

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CDROM."

My problem is, my computer didn't need a disc when I set it up, and there wasn't one that came with the computer. is there anything I can do myself, or will i have to take it to a repair shop?

there's gotta be somewhere more helpful than UG. try some customer service thing, or google.

Delete all your system32 files. You don't need them.

I know how to fix this. You need to get the installation cd for your OS and reinstall your operating system. Try getting your friend to lend you the disc if they are in possession of it. Thats all you need to do.

T*****t Windows XP and burn the image onto a CD. You can then use that to repair your system file.

Use damn small linux off a USB key, retrive your files that you need to keep.

Full format and install XP again.

Best way imo.
