Rowr yo, I'm loving the Tom Morello Guitar Battle from Guitar Hero III. So much, that I think Morello's become my main inspiration. Essentially, I wanna play like that, you know? I'm about to shell out for an Ebow, since I suck at harmonics, and I figure it'll be a shortcut to some fun styles, but I was also wondering - how much of Morello's crazy stuff can be done without effects or a Wah pedal?

Or are there any cool noises you guys have come up with, improvising without pedals?

So yeah - discussion on effects sans effects pedals. Lets go! :p

if ur gonna shell out for an ebow... go for a boss me-50. its a multifx board and suits me fine for anything i wanna do.
#3
Is it programmable? And how many effects does it have / how many can it store?

So if you're planning to buy some toilet paper, get a banana instead. Completely different things, you know?

Anyway, I'd imagine he uses a LOT of Whammy (the digitech pedal), so you might look into that. It's not very cheap, tho.

Edit: Not that the ME-50 is a bad idea, since I believe it has some interesting effects (at least the GT-8 has, I think), but that suggestion just came right out of the blue.

Oh, maybe I should've specified. Figured everyone knew what they were since they were getting a bit of media attention now; an ebow is an energy / electric bow. Essentially a violin bow for guitar, it rings a string without plucking them, giving an etheral kinda fade in effect. Or you can set it to ring out a harmonic on every note.

I want one for the 'differentness' of it. :p

looks like some of you don't know what an eBow is...let me enlighten you. It held like a pick, but it emits sound waves which in turn cause the strings on your guitar to vibrate. It simulates the sound you would get if you played your guitar with a violin bow.

My wife plays my guitars fine, but my girlfriend has smaller hands, and she wants to learn how to play.

Ouch... what would you say is the essential stuff though? I mean, even he admits he doesn't use everything in his setup.

Wah Wah pedal, and a multieffects board seem like the road I'll be headed down eventually...

A killswitch is a must for Tom Morello noises. (For example; the intro to Know Your Enemy, Calm Like a Bomb, Bulls on Parade)

Also, if you want to do most of his noises, you have to get a digitech whammy. There's no way around it. Songs like Calm Like a Bomb, Born As Ghosts, Killing the Name of, all use the whammy.

He'll also use his DD6 sometimes on songs like Guerilla Radio and a lot of Audioslave stuff.

Basically, a killswitch and a whammy and you can get most of his sounds.

I use the toggle pickup killswitch method. It's not perfect, but it works. I can play the Bulls on Parade scratch, but it sounds all 'samey' since I don't have a wah wah pedal, and can't vary it much...

What specific sounds do you want to get? If you give me a song I can probably figure out what he's doing.

Uh, the house riff to his Guitar Battle in GHIII would be nice. :p

It's killswitching, but he's doing something on top of that as well, and I can't figure out what it is. He plays it 3 or so times during the song, then a faster, more manic version of it again as the outro.

Yesterday I was playing with my friends and kicked on the wah and then started sweeping the strings with my hand, then occasionally pick sliding for a sec then keep sweeping it with my hands.

It sounded kind of like dj scratching, and with a good, funky drumbeat it sounded pretty cool. I was really high though, that might have had something to do with why I liked it

Better vid - the whole song. :3

The parts I wanna learn are present throughout the whole thing now that I listen to it properly. It's most distinct at 48 seconds, 58 seconds, 1:08 and 1:18. The best two are at 1:28 and 1:38 though - more pronounced and distinct sounding.

Also, the intro and outro are a similar technique, but sound a little... harder.

Oh, and one random bit, unrelated to the killswitchery - the squealy at 1:23. I need to learn that. Hell, just that one chord. It's a fantastic sound.

digitech whammy pedal and a pickup switch will give you 90% of morellos sound

granted a digitech whammy costs around 300

I vote the squealy as a regular pinch harmonic + IPS, (Intelligent Pitch Shift), which is one of the functions, I believe, of the Whammy pedal. I know I have it on my RP250. Not that I could make it sound like that anyway...

Tried it in a guitar shop. Pinch harmonic + a load of whammy and echo on the amp is... kinda like it. :p

Still got no idea how to do the scratching, after trying all weekend. >_>

You can do a lot of Morello's stuff using your pickup switch, a wah, a whammy and a delay. And then test the setup out to see what you can come up with, I'm sure even he hasn't discovered all the possibilities.

Aye, but what about that scratchy noise? >:3
