If your say playing behind a c chord you'd play the c scale. cdefgabc. k but i see a lot of guitarest not playing a scale on the same string they go to say the 3 rd 2nd and 1rst a lot. Is that going out side the scale? Or are they playing the scale just octives higher?.

they mihgt be passing notes back to the scale i dunno im confused.

They're still playing the same scale - remember each note appears on the guitar in about 12 places.

Mostly likely they're playing a certain mode in the key that they're in.

key of Fmaj has one flat which is Bb

so your scale would be

F-G-A-Bb-C-D-E-F

the three main chords being played in this key would be

Fmaj - Bmaj - Cmaj

so for a solo, you could play the Fmaj scale (above) in ANY position on the neck. At any point on your neck where there is a F, you can play a scale from there.

also, you can change the scale in use to fit the chord being played.

for example, F-C-B chord change. you can use F-C-B scals runs over each chord.

there are also modes (google - circle of fifths). i dunno muc about that really, just that you can drop the key by 5 semi tones and it will sound sweet.

Ie. if your in the key of F, a solo in the key of c# will sound good.

i thought F scale you could do a popular I IV V progresion which would be F C D. And can i do F anywhere on the neck or does it have to be FABCDEF in order. Does it have to be in order. also in this http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/guitar_scales.php?scch=F&scchnam=Pentatonic+Major&get2=Get
there is no E and Bb so how would i get those notes?

1/ I - IV - V progression in F is actually F-Bb-C mate! sorry my mistake above.

2/ If you pick any F on the neck and move two frets up, you will be on a G. same for any position, any string mate!

once you learn one scale, you will notice patterns start emerging. same with chord progressions (bar chords). its all pattersn on the neck.

3/ your looking at a pentatonic scale. select Major scale from the list for the full scale.

yeah if say ur in F, you can play any note that is in the key of F, any way you want, and it should fit with what you're improvising/soloing over

I'll put money on them not being "out of scale" notes, or modes. They're just playing the exact same scale in different places. You're looking for a complicated answer to a simple question
